A work of love -- one of the great living painters

I first discovered Hardwicke-Olivieri's work (Catamount) at the New Britain Museum of American Art. The painting astonished me, and I was delighted when I returned with my girlfriend (to whom I had said nothing of the painting) and watched her discover this piece on her own and stand spellbound for the better part of an hour as we discussed it. I have since gone on to explore this painter's work online and in her earlier book by David Pagel.

Closer to Wildness is a masterpiece: filled with details of her paintings it allows me to get close enough to see what the paintings actually look like. Hardwicke's work rewards those with patience as it is often filled with glimpses of many worlds in the small vignettes surrounding or intermingling with the main subject. The tracery of tattoo like writing is often legible in the detailed reproductions. The text allows the artist to talk to us about her thoughts on these paintings.

As I show this book to others I find that her appeal is nearly universal. Personally, I love her artistic mastery of scale, paint, drawing, color, and ability to coordinate themes and motifs within a larger piece with the mastery of a great composer. As an artist I wasn't sure if others would appreciate this genius -- but I am thrilled that her work seems to speak to all, whether they share her particular fascinations or not. Her work compels awe, respect, and love.

The Best Christian Resource on the New Age Movement

Ron Rhodes is well-known in the Christian Community for his excellent books on Cults and the New Age Movement (NAM). The greatest thing about this book is that it consolidates the best information from Christian and non-Christian sources on NAM and provides concise and clear refutations of major New Age doctrines such as moral relativism, pantheism and reincarnation.
Non-Christians should be aware that the purpose of this book, and other books in this Zondervan series, is to refute anti-Christian beliefs and defend Christian ones. But this shouldn't intimidate those New Agers who are sure about what they believe. Even if they aren't convinced by the counter-arguments, they will find the book helpful to better understanding the NAM. Also, the bibliography is excellent.
Check out the other books in this series, especially the ones on Satanism, Witchcraft, and Astrology. All have the same concise outline format for easy reference.

Good Introduction to the New Age Movement

In my humble opinion, Rhodes has written an excellent introduction to the New Age Movement and how it compares to true Christianity.

The book's contents are as follows:

1. Introduction to the New Age Movement.

2. Overview of New Age Theology, in its own words.

3. Tips for witnessing to New Agers.

4. Bibliography for further study on the movement.

5. A comparison chart showing what New Agers and the Bible say about: Continuing Revelation, God, Jesus Christ, Humanity is God, Sin, Salvation, Reincarnation, and the Second Coming.

In an age where human self-worship glorified, many people are sure to be offended by the booklet's contents. Sadly, many people refuse to believe there is something larger than themselves and that we are not divine!

For the New Ager: please honestly evaluate what you believe and how it truly contradicts Scripture.

For the Christian: this is an excellent introduction to what New Agers believe and can help you better understand how you can relate to them on spiritual matters.

A FAMOUS EVANGELICAL APOLOGIST LOOKS AT THE "NEW AGE"

Ron Rhodes is currently President of "Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries," and sometimes teaches cult apologetics at various seminaries. He was formerly Editor/Associate Editor of the Christian Research Institute's Journal and Newsletter, and a frequent guest on the "Bible Answer Man" radio program. He has written many books, such as The Counterfeit Christ of the New Age Movement, The 10 Most Important Things You Can Say to a Jehovah's Witness, Challenge of the Cults and New Religions, The, Reasoning from the Scriptures with the Mormons, Reasoning from the Scriptures with Catholics, Reasoning from the Scriptures with Muslims, Answering the Objections of Atheists, Agnostics, and Skeptics, etc.

Here are some quotations from this 1995 booklet:

"Differences Between the New Age Movement and the 1960s counterculture: a. The New Age spans all ages and does not just cater to youth. b. Rock music is not a rallying point for New Agers. c. New Agers cannot be distinguished from others by the way they dress. d. New Agers are not 'anti-establishment.' e. New Agers are generally not 'druggies' like those in the counterculture movement of the 1960s." (Pg. 28)

Mentoring is investing in PEOPLE

I honestly thought this book would provide some practical tips on teaching others. It certainly does that, but much more. This book is not some list of quick tips on how to be a better teacher. Instead, it's a plea to pour out your life for the benefit of OTHERS. My whole notion of a "mentor" was totally changed after reading this book.

Dr Davis suggests that the job of a true mentor is to invest in people. Mentors are "not to produce great men and women, but rather to energize ordinary men and women to be greatly motivated for the cause of Jesus Christ."

To cite just one example of practical advice found here: Ron advises the prospective mentor to become an AFFIRMER, as opposed to a strict EVALUATOR. We need to build-up those we counsel, rather than tear them down. Mentoring is investing in people.

I especially appreciated the touching examples of the author's father and brother--both who lived the lives of meaningful mentors to those in their paths.

To those who think that mentoring might be a real ego booster, Ron has some startling news: The Godly mentor doesn't seek his or her own glory. Quite the opposite, in fact. Mentoring, the Biblical way, is a "thankless, unattractive, unpretentious calling."

I highly recommend this serious and thought-provoking work by Dr. Ron Lee Davis.

About the Author
The author is a writer and scholar on the Washington scene. He served in the Johnson White House and as a Senate staffer. His previous books include: the just released, Nothing to Fear: FDR in Photographs (Vandamere Press, 2001); the internationally acclaimed Roosevelt biography, FDR's Splendid Deception, 3rd Edition (Vandamere Press, 1999); Black Bird Fly Away: Disabled in an Able-bodied World (Vandamere Press, 1998); By Trust Betrayed: Patients, Physicians, and the License to Kill in the Third Reich, 2nd Edition (Vandamere Press, 1995); and Advise and Obstruct: The Role of the United States Senate in Foreign Policy Decisions (Delacorte, 1969), a Pulitzer Prize Nominee. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, People, Mainstream, and many other publications. He is a highly regarded and popular speaker nationwide on both disability and presidential history. He is the father of the Architectural Barriers Act, and considered to be the grandfather of the Disability Rights Act. Gallagher contracted paralytic polio in 1952. He was rehabilitated at the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. He is paraplegic, uses a wheelchair, and lives in Cabin John, Maryland. In 1995 he was awarded the prestigious Henry B. Betts award in recognition of his lifelong contributions to disability thought.

An historical look back in the recent history of Alaska

The author has captured the man who is Etok and at the same time given us a look into politics in early Alaska statehood. Etok's intensity of feelings for his people and his land was powerful and unharnessed. This is demonstrated well here. Also, we get a look into both congressional and presidential politics of this era. This book is more than about this one man.

Couldn't put it down...

Etok is my uncle. I knew it had a lot about Alaska Native land claims, but it was so much more. I learned more about my own family, more about Inupiaq culture, and of course, more about Native rights and the political resurgence of Alaska Natives. It was a really good book! I couldn't put it down.

I recommend it to anyone who's interested in Native Land Claims, or Native rights in general.

Excellent History

I was a childhood friend of Charlie. We called him "Etook," not "Etok," if the spelling is any indication of pronunciation. It's a curious difference that makes me wonder about the real depth of the author in penetrating this man's story, but it's certainly accurate in respect to the living conditions and culture I knew as a young white boy, the son of a missionary, living in the village of Barrow.
