About the Author
Michel Dubois is a Professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC) and part of the Computer Engineering Directorate. Before joining USC in 1984, he was a research engineer at the Central Research Laboratory of Thomson-CSF in Orsay, France. He has published more than 150 technical papers on computer architecture and edited two books. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the ACM.
Murali Annavaram is an Assistant Professor and Robert G. and Mary G. Lane Early Career Chair in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California, and part of the Computer Engineering Directorate, where he has developed and taught advanced computer architecture courses. Prior to USC, he spent six years at Intel researching various aspects of future CMP designs.
Per Stenström is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. He has published two textbooks and over 100 technical papers. He has been a visiting scientist at Carnegie-Mellon University, Stanford University and the University of Southern California, and also was engaged in research at Sun Microsystems on its chip-multithreading technology. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the ACM and is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and the Academia Europaea.

Best computer architecture book out there!

This book puts Patterson/Hennessy's book to shame! (Comp Arch: A Quantitative Approach)
For the most part this book covers everything CA:QA covers while at the same time being much more concrete. Although written by three authors, the book is very well written, greatly organized, sentences are clear and to the point, and most importantly, it does not pointlessly repeat information or put off key topics to the Appendices.
I love the fact that this book covers important information other comp. architecture don't (eg. Gustafson's law, difference between Vector and Array (systolic) processors, CMOS transistor-level basics, message-passing, interconnect basics, routing techniques, programming models). Even more gratifying is the fact that they spend a whole chapter describing the taxonomy of simulators! Every single commercial/academia processor out there is co-designed with the help of simulators nowadays. To me its just mind-boggling that other computer architecture books don't cover this essential topic.
Like any other computer architecture book out there, this book will NOT make you an expert in computer architecture. However, this book does exactly what it is supposed to do, and that is to give you a concise, complete review of what computer architecture is all about.
Having said, I would argue Computer Organization and Design (Hennessy) is a better book for beginners or people that need to review the basics. On the other hand, if you are looking to become more of an expert in any of the subfields within computer architecture I would recommend "Readings in Computer Architecture" by Hill/Jouppi/Sohi. Although not necessary up-to-date, the papers included in that book are classics and definitely must-read. Another great book is "Introduction to High Performance Computing for Scientists and Engineers" by Hager/Wellein.
Note: One drawback to be aware off is that this book doesn't cover Vector/GPU architecture as much in detail as CA:QA. However, in my opinion you would be better off just reading particular research papers on these topics.

Very up to date

When I studied parallel computing hardware as a grad student 20+ years ago it was a much simpler field. This turned out to be a perfect book for becoming acquainted with modern design principles and practice. I had a particular need to understand how we can better support database concurrent updates at a hardware level and I got a few nice ideas from the book, in my view way more than the price of admission.

Excellent computer architecture textbook

The field of computer architecture and microprocessor design has undergone a significant change in the past decade. The three best books about computer architecture that I know of are:
Computer Architecture, Fifth Edition: A Quantitative Approach
Modern Processor Design: Fundamentals of Superscalar Processors
Parallel Computer Organization and Design (this book)
Of these three books, Parallel Computer Organization and Design has the best coverage of the issues that have limited the increase in single core performance, as well as important constraints in the development of multicore processors.
Despite the title, this book covers all the important elements associated with the design of modern high performance CPUs, not just parallel computers.
The first four chapters focus on topics that don't directly deal with parallelism, but matter more for the design of the components in a CPU. These chapters help motivate the demand for parallel computers by highlighting limitations of scalar architectures, but they also give a good overview of fundamental concepts for the design of a CPU core. Chapters 5 through 8 focus on topics related to designing a parallel system, while chapter 9 provides a survey of simulation techniques used in the development of modern CPUs.
The book is organized in a logical fashion and it is instructive to read it from cover to cover. However, each chapter also provides standalone coverage of a specific topic and can be read individually. The chapters are also comprehensive and the book does not assume that the reader has an extensive background in computer architecture. I think it would be useful as a textbook for someone in a computer architecture course, or simply as a good reference on modern CPU design.
My primary complaint with the book is the lack of references. There are none. While the authors clearly drew on a vast amount of personal knowledge, mistakes or omissions are inevitable when covering so much material. For instance, I noticed that the explanation of the SMARTS sampling technique on pages 512-513 was not completely correct. This made me somewhat less confident about other topics explained in the book that I don't have as much expertise in. Having references would have added to the credibility of the book.
Another failing is that the book does not differentiate clearly between topics that are implemented in commercially available CPUs and ones that currently only exist as research proposals. This was most notable in the explanation of thread-level speculation in section 8.5.4. Also, Chapter 9 did not differentiate between simulation techniques used primarily in academic research and those used for development of real CPUs.
Overall, however, I found the book to be a clear and comprehensive survey of the most important topics related to the design of modern CPUs, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn and understand the details of how modern CPUs work.
