Having been marketed to millions as a weight-loss solution, the Atkins diet is now presented as a means of preventing type 2 diabetes, a disease whose rates are skyrocketing, thanks to the prevalence of risk factors such as obesity and high lipid and blood sugar levels. The authors clearly outline their interpretation of the path to diabetes, arguing that carbs cause blood sugar spikes, triggering the release of more insulin—the hormone that regulates blood sugar—than the cells need. Blood sugar ends up stored as fat and the body's cells start responding more slowly to the insulin, which leads to elevated blood sugar levels. But the tone the authors adopt when touting their low-carb, high-protein, high-fat approach may arouse some skepticism and even fear. "In the end, only you can decide what's best for your health," they warn. "You can choose the Atkins approach and improve your health, or you can choose the ADA [American Diabetes Association] approach and descend into more and more medications and poor health." While studies now demonstrate low-carb dieting can lead to weight loss and cholesterol control over the short term, experts tend to agree that diets that demonize one food group aren't easy to stick to over the long haul. Still, the work includes valuable nutritional information and sounds a needed alarm about the diabetes epidemic.

For the diabetic, pre-diabetic or just plain obese - this is the book!

This book has become my bible.

Low carbohydrate eating has received a bad rap over the years, but I am an enthusiastic convert. Since I received an A1C of 129 and looked in the mirror and saw a grossly obese woman looking back at me, I had been desperately trying to lose weight with no success until I came back to Atkins. I had used it years ago - no health concerns other than obesity - and it worked like a charm.

When I found this book here at Amazon I though - OK - give it a shot. It was well worth the try. In fact, I can honestly say it has changed my life. No more guilt. No more panic. No more "munchie" attacks. Because of this book I have FINALLY taken control of my eating. It's been a Godsend to me.

This book is chock full of valuable information on how to promote this sensible, delicious, healthful way of eating as a weapon again diabetes.

As soon as I established exactly what the rules were and how to go about mapping out my meals for each day it became sinfully easy. I'm never hungry, the pounds are dropping off and I feel better all the time. It's a goldmine of information. My sugar is down, my cholesterol is down, my mind is clear and I'm never disappointed with my meals.

A typical day for me would be a breakfast omelet of two medium or small eggs beaten with 2 Tbs of heavy cream and filled with 1/4 C of shredded Monterrey jack and cheddar with freshly ground pepper, with a (fresh) sausage patty, and a cup of piping hot black vanilla tea. For lunch I might have a grilled chicken breast (or a generous portion of stewed beef with broth, or medallions of braised pork loin or ...) and a half cup of chunks of cucumber with skin on and a half cup of red bell pepper cut in large chunks with 2 Tbs of ranch (regular) dressing. For dinner I'd have a cup of steaming chicken broth dressed with a Tbs of grated Parmesan to start, 2 center cut pork chops seasoned with garlic and fresh black pepper, and 2 cups of assorted salad greens (including a few grape or cherry tomatoes) dressed with flavored vinegar (no balsamic)and olive oil, or a cup of chunks of celery and peppers with dressing and a cup of steamed broccoli with a pat (or two) of butter. For dessert sugar free gelatin (I make my own - those little cup packs are convenient, but TOO expensive) with whipped heavy cream sweetened with Splenda. For a snack during the day, a 1 ounce stick of smoked string cheese.

I swear to you, I no longer experience that hollow, gnawing sense of hunger that drives you to the refrigerator or the cupboard looking for something to fill the hole. I know this sounds too good to be true, but sometimes I have to remember to eat. What a concept, huh?

I'm avoiding caffeine. That was the nugget from this book that truly tipped the scales for me. The book's explanation made me realize that I needed to make that change. There were headachey days while I was weaning myself off the caffeine load my body was used to, but after I dropped down to 1 large cup of half/caff Hazelnut coffee at my desk in the morning the weight loss revved up considerably. I've turned to black cherry, strawberry, peach, apricot or green grape flavored sugar free seltzer water instead of colas, or just plain water for most of the rest of the day. I now choose flavored decaffeinated teas and the flavor difference from caffeinated is minuscule.

I'm doing a combination of carb and calorie counting, and it works like a charm. This one I learned early on - there's a good reason why the book tells you not to use processed meats - like bacon, many types of sausage, deli or luncheon meats, even wieners. They all contain SUGAR! After using the daily nutrition counter on Sparkpeople it came through to me with a bang that bacon is just not in the cards in large quantities. It is incredibly calorie dense. Better to have fresh salsiccia sausage than honey cured bacon. The calorie difference is stunning!

I'm in perpetual Induction - keeping my carbs below 20 per day and my calories below 1800, and I'm losing weight every day. I'm not perfect, so I do go over now and then, but it's easy to get back on the program. One thing that is essential to this program is - you MUST eat. Don't skip meals. Follow the program and you'll be full and thinner before you know it.

Remember this - don't eat white food - white bread, white rice, ice cream - perhaps the only truly white food that is allowed is cauliflower which makes a GREAT substitute for mashed potatoes or grated coarsely for rice. I've used it as a substitute for rice in stuffed pepper recipes and it worked beautifully. Eat fruit sparingly, but eat it! Once in OWL (ongoing weight loss) be sure to eat only those with the lowest GI (glycemic index). No fear - there are plenty that fit.

Most diets are about deprivation. This is perhaps the most significant thing about Atkins - you'll never feel deprived. You literally pamper yourself with delicious foods, and still you lose weight.

The book is for real people. It educates you. It includes recipes, meal plans, discussion on the finest details of what causes diabetes and what is necessary to stop it. It outlines what sugar substitutes to use - which are the most healthful oils - how to break through a plateau - how caffeine affects your blood sugar.

This is the quintessential sourcebook. I carry it in my car so I can refer to it when I need to - whether at home, at work, or out in the world just living my life. Teamed up with The Essential Atkins for Life Kit, this book is a real winner.

For anyone out there who is diabetic, pre-diabetic, or just plain overweight, this book is sensible, readable, easy to navigate and beautifully effective.

Check with your doctor before committing, but once committed, give it a good solid try. I believe you will find it can work for you. It sure worked for me!

After 5 weeks...

Had blood test done on July 12th and immediately got a call from the doctor's office that I had to start shooting myself with insulin, take metformin, and lovastatin because my blood sugar was very high and I had type 2 diabetes. I had done the Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution back in the mid 70's and lost 60 lbs in 8 months so I knew it would work for me. BTW, I was able to keep the weight off for many years but gained 20 lbs when I got pregnant with my youngest.

There was no way I was going to shoot myself with insulin but I did start taking the metformin. After 4 days into the metformin, I had to stop because of extreme digestive side effect. The first time I checked my blood sugar it was at 342. I ordered and read the Atkins Diabetes Revolution and found that it's basically the same as the original Atkins Diet so I've strictly followed it. I have steadily gone down to 123 blood sugar level in the morning and am well within the normal range for after my last meal of the day.

The book is great, it has very detailed information regarding the chemical changes in the body when you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is very thorough. I enjoyed the writing style of the authors and strongly recommend to anyone who is facing the diabetes challenge. The diet works for both losing weight and also lowering blood sugar levels.

This Book Could Change You.

Doctor told me I was on the line and becoming diabetic like all my family members. I said no.

Read this book ... basic and straightforward. I'd read about the author and her practice in Men's Health. I followed her advice step by step. It's a lifestyle change. I ate different and cooked different. I started walking every day. More and more. I lost weight and changed my blood chemistry. Shocked my doctor. Cholesterol and thyroid and blood pressure all moved to normal.

Is it hard to give up some food? Yes.
Does it take dedication to stick with this? Yes.
This book is a map to health.
It'll only take you there if you follow it.

About the Author
Born in Barbados, West Indies, Neville came to the United States to study drama at the age of seventeen. In 1932 he gave up the theater to devote his attention to his studies in mysticism when he began his lecture career in New York City. After traveling throughout the country, he eventually made his home in Los Angeles where, in the late 1950's, he gave a series of talks on television, and for many years, lectured regularly to capacity audiences at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Although Neville's career peaked in the late 1950's and early 60's, his message continues to find a place in the hearts of spiritual readers throughout the world today. Neville Goddard was one of the more quietly dramatic and supremely influential teachers in the New Thought field for many years.

Just Buy It,.. And follow it, and Be What this book Teaches

It's almost ludicrous that the price of this book is equal to that of a music CD, given the potential impact to one's life if its teachings are embraced and practiced. It is IMPOSSIBLE to put a value on this book!! It is beyond any of the existing self-development or metaphysical material I've ever read, though the basic premise has been covered by many writers, even Napoleon Hill. While Hill spends some time covering how important it is to visualize your goals, Neville basically drills it into you in the deepest, most profound way, and his writings all hammer into you the exact method by which you need to "feel" as if you're already there in your desired circumstance, place, goal achievement, reality, whatever.
Neville illustrates the teachings of the Bible to show how the Bible alludes to how important it is to see yourself as you WANT TO BE, not what your 5 senses are seeing right now. If you're not religious, don't let this dissuade you. You will finally understand the wonderful symbology of the Bible and what It teaches you. In Resurrection, Neville convinces you that your desired reality actually exists, but you need to *feel* yourself into this reality without doubt, before it materializes....

A major difference between Neville and other more modern metaphysical writers is that Neville's teachings impress upon you the importance of Identity. Instead of trying to be a "doer": visualize and affirm until you believe something.. you instead assume the very Identity of the version of you that is already in that desired circumstance. How? With Feeling.
Leave behind the version of you that is -wanting- and that is -lacking- in consciousness. Be consumed by that identity, that version of you, that is *already* fulfilled, seeing the world -from- that fulfilled view, *even* when the outside "facts" show otherwise. Don't come at this from a feeling of lack, or "try to get something" with techniques, as in: "I must apply this law of attraction stuff in just the right way, or I will be in lack".
Neville is way ahead of the familiar LOA stuff - he speaks very matter of factly about how basic and True these principles are, and he's trying to get through to you that you must remember that the outer world is just a blank canvas and your Inner habit of Feeling, from morning to night, is the -only- source, the only thing that this canvas can get material from!
Instead, simply Be that which you desire, to the point that it almost wouldn't even matter if the outer material world reflected your desired life, because you are already being that fulfilled version of yourself and you Feel it. When you read and re-read Neville, you'll see

By the way, if this book is unavailable, first try several metaphysics shops, including the used section. Keep in mind, that this book is a collection of short pamphlet-size books, really. And the relatively new book, The Neville Reader, contains the vast majority of these mini-books!

The best minibook in my opinion: Feeling Is The Secret 1944, and another one I love is: Prayer: The Art of Believing 1945,.. but the whole collection is dynamite.

I bought the Neville Reader myself, even though I own Resurrection, so I'd recommend the Neville Reader book also, regardless.

Neville, a prolific writer and lecturer deals with creative visualization and the transformation of consciousness. This outstanding book addresses: Prayer - The Art of Believing, Feeling Is The Secret, Freedom For All, Out of This World, and Resurrection. Memorable comments abound, including: change the future (216), rapport between the conscious and subconscious mind of the operator (14), be careful of your moods (76), the perfectly disciplined person (103), mental pregnancy (151), and as you judge others (171). Sometimes words fail to adequately convey just how powerful a book can be. When I first read Neville, it was just after reading another book called 3 Magic Words. Neville's words seemed to be the next level of "how to" to the theory and principles of "Words". I recommend it highly, (You know you're ready for it simply by virture of being here at this website reading this..that's how the universe works!)

Changed My View of Fashion and Style

Streetstyle changed my entire perception of fashion, style, and how they’ve influenced each other over time. I read the original, written in 1994, but this updated version, which continues into the 21st century, has everything the first book had, and more.

I keep going back to look at the amazing pictures. They’re colorful, and outrageous, kind of a reference to street style from mid-century to the present day. But the text – especially the “Trickle Down Bubble Up” chapter, pulls together what happened over time culturally.

There’s a new chapter on Eastern style, with pictures of some street style that could only have come out of Japan. If you don’t know the difference between a Harajuku girl and a Gothic Lolita, you’ve got to check it out. My personal favorite photo is in “Modern Primitives” – it shows a woman baring her back, which is tattooed from top to bottom with thick tiger stripes.

If you loved the first book or if you’re interested in the interaction of style and culture (or if you love offbeat photography), read this book. It gets a 5 star rating from me.

POOR ENGLISH TRANSLATION.(part if my problem is that the sources are in the same 'BOLD FONT' so the reader goes straight into the source as if its part of the story line) TRANSLATED 1985. NOT FLOWING.LOTS OF DETAILS AND ALL THE SOURCES ARE GIVEN(which is good so I can reference the information in the original Hebrew)
I PICKED UP SOME POINTS. I don't know who would want this because of the paper quality,
the font is 'bold' thick black bold. They could have done a better job. This is 2016. Everything can be computerized TO IMPROVE. (the abbreviations are not the usual so I had to keep going in the back of the book).(once you get used to this style it makes it a little easier to read. Still its a poor layout
THE VALUE IS NOT THERE IN PRINT BOOK BINDING PAPER AND PRINTING.BUT NEW INFORMATION/KNOWLEDGE IS PRICELESS. ITS JUST NOT A COMFORTABLE READ.

A superb reference work

There are many books that claim to be an "introduction" to the Talmud. Most of them make that introduction without much context. Strack's volume will not teach you how to study Talmud and Midrash, but it will give you a good understanding of what they are and how they fit into the larger frame of Jewish tradition and literature.

For the intermediate and more advanced reader alike, the book is a well-indexed reference work for Talmud and Midrash study, including quick and simple definitions of terms, identifications of obscure titles, and superior (if occasionally outdated) bibliographies for each chapter. This is a work that should be in the library of every serious student of rabbinics.

Simply the best work available on the subject

This is simply the best work available on the subject. Each section is based on a common plan: The text is briefly discussed; variant textual versions of texts are discussed; English translations are noted; and a detailed review is then given of the past hundred years of critical study on the document in question.
It has sections on Rabbinical Hermeneutics and the Oral and Written Tradition. It covers the Mishna, Tosefta, Palestinian Talmud, Babylonian Talmud and the extracanonical tractates. Best of all, it covers all the classical midrashim compilations (midrash). This includes all the halakhic, exegetical and homiletic midrashim.
However, note that this is not a book for beginners. For those who want an introduction to rabbinical literature, you should obtain "Back to the Sources: Reading the Classic Jewish Texts", edited by Barry W. Holtz.

What is mindfulness and what is its power over unhealthy cravings?
 
The word mindfulness can have many different meanings, especially as mindfulness practices become more popular. At its essence, it is about being fully aware of what is happening right now, in this moment. And in particular, paying attention to the tendency to be pulled into reacting (often habitually) out of wanting to hold on to or get more of a pleasant experience than we might be having, or get rid of an unpleasant experience. Seeing the world and our reactions to it more clearly can help us step out from being under the spell of cravings, so that we can consciously choose our actions.
 
You have practiced mindfulness for many years. How does a beginner learn to practice its techniques?
 
In short, it is really helpful to simply begin to notice what cravings feel like in our body. We can even note or label them as a way to experience them more clearly, such as the feeling of tightness or restlessness that arises with a craving.
 
What new developments in your addiction research are most exciting to you?
 
We’re very excited to be testing our new mindful eating app (Eat Right Now), which teaches people to work with stress and emotionally-induced cravings for food. It turns out that we can be addicted to junk food very much in the same way as cigarettes or cocaine.
 
You’ve written that harmful addictions are reinforced by conditions in our world today. Which of those conditions concern you most?
 
The ready availability of technologies that can foster both craving as well as distraction, such as smartphones. These are great technologies that should include a warning label that they too can become addictive.

About the Author
Judson Brewer, MD, PhD, is director of research at the Center for Mindfulness and associate professor in medicine and psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Yale University and a research affiliate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lives in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, founded the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Best book to date that integrates the science and the wisdom of mindfulness

This is not just yet another book about mindfulness. Brewer lines up the modern science of reward-based learning with the ancient teachings of dependent origination culminating in a comprehensive, accessible approach to understanding human behavior. And it’s not just theory but supported by Brewer’s research in the fields of neuroscience and addiction. His mindfulness-based treatment model was twice as effective as the gold standard treatment for smoking cessation.

The combination of scientific research and personal experiences presented in the book make the teaching clear and accessible. As a psychologist and meditation practitioner, I have to say this is the best book to date that integrates the science and the wisdom of mindfulness in away that can be transformational to anyone who ever had a habit they wanted to change. Highly recommended.

Dr. Brewer has woven together personal narrative and deep science reporting to create a very readable account of how mindfulness practice can help us come to terms with the ways our brains trip us up and limit our lives. Groundbreaking: Must Read for Parents

Every parent, teacher and person who doesn’t know why they fall into cravings and habits should buy this book. Cravings and addiction have reached new, epidemic heights and our youngest are the most vulnerable. Children are walking into traffic because they can’t disconnect from their smartphones. Parents are alienating their families and friends because their phones and facebook control them. And, distracted behavior (enabled through smartphones and social media) is the “new normal,” not the exception. With this book, Dr. Brewer reviews the challenges many of us face, and then provides a clear roadmap that shows how to reduce craving, addiction and suffering (with ourselves, our children and families). He shows how mindfulness can easily short circuit destructive habits and addictions. Building on this, he discusses how to reduce distraction and increase focus so that we can better concentrate, learn, grow and be more complete human beings. He illuminates meditation techniques used 2500 years ago to deal with craving, and then he tests these techniques (and their effectiveness) with Western science and technology in neuroscience and clinical laboratories with fMRI machines. The scientific proof is in the book. This book can change your outlook, your behavior and your life. Dr. Brewer has provided us with a gift that can help us be better to ourselves, and more complete, focused and happier with our families and society. For me, I really loved the part of the book discussing states of effortless “flow,” that can naturally make us more joyful, focused, content and integrated as human beings. This book is brilliant: powerful, simple, elegant and complex. I have never bought so many copies of a book to give to family and friends in my life. Read it.
