Solid content, spotty form

The content is comprehensive, timely, and accurate (I say this from the perspectives of both a former HRM executive and a university professor). In fact, a professor could probably use this textbook to teach an employee staffing course even to students who have not had an introductory HRM course as a prerequisite. Summary tables and figures in each chapter are very useful for focusing classroom discussion.

The proofreading and copy editing were apparently poor for this textbook, so users have to overlook misused pronouns, a few badly broken sentences, many infinitives split with unnecessary adverbs, and so on. Here's an example on page 257: "Personality tests are easy to use, but applicants often react to poorly to them" (what's an extra "to" here and there?). The one that convinced me Pearson and the authors used interns and undergraduates to write some of the book is this gem on page 334: "Becoming a doctor is often sequential, whereas becoming a manger is often random." Becoming a manger--a hay box for cattle and horses--sounds painful. Granted, undergraduate and MBA students have written about mangers for years and found such sloppy spelling (and the sloppy proofreading that permits it to stay in text) is wrong, but Pearson permits this stuff in its textbooks now.

Developing Ajummas

"Dynamic Korea" is the local government's official slogan used to promote the country as an international tourist destination and would-be "Hub of Asia," and might also serve as the rallying cry of those cheerleaders of South Korea's breakneck development ethos. For those more skeptical of the country's ideology of development as it has manifested itself over the past four decades or so, "melodrama of mobility" perhaps more accurately and succinctly describes the mood and condition of South Korean society in the modern era. After reading Nancy Abelmann's "The Melodrama of Mobility," the utopian thinking expressed in such phrases as "Dynamic Korea" and the "Hub of Asia" ring all the more hollow.
Any foreigner who has lived in South Korea for a while has no doubt noticed the confusion and anxiety that seem to permeate just about every level and aspect of Korea society. Change, after all, is the only constant in South Korea. "The Melodrama of Mobility" is a satisfying exploration and analysis of some of the root causes of such confusion and anxiety, specifically from the gendered viewpoints of eight middle-aged South Korean women. The next time the visiting foreigner is elbowed brutally in the side by an ajumma ("auntie") rushing onto a subway car to occupy the last free seat, while they may not quite forgive her, at least they can better understand her.
"The Melodrama of Mobilty" uses the concept of social mobilty to trace the lives of these women as they travel back and forth from countryside to city, across class lines and generational divides, across ever-shifting landscapes of memory and desire. A kind of poststructuralist approach to ethnography and anthropology, the author's main aim is to show that these women's social and personal lives are in constant flux, and cannot be neatly "fixed" or "reified" into static categories of class, status, gender and identity. In this, she largely suceeds.
All in all, I enjoyed this book, but had a few problems with the form or structure of it, as well as deployment of the notion of "melodrama" as displayed prominently in the title.
First of all, it's hard to tell who this book's target audience is, beyond some nebulous "Korean Studies" or "Women's Studies" community. At times the book is overloaded with all the usual academic apendages such as constant citations of other academics including page number and year within the text, as well as constant definitions of critical terms and an overly self-concious attention paid to the writer's working methodology. And at the same time, the book is often theoretically dense, befitting a poststructuralist approach, all of which suggests this is a book geared for academics and perhaps undergraduates. However, the book is overly simple in parts and seems to treat the reader like a high school student who needs his or her hand held to get the author's points. Every chapter begins and concludes with summaries of the points made in the chapter, and often includes summaries and restatements already made in previous chapters, as well as teasers advertising points to be made in later chapters, etc., etc. This gets to be tedious after a while, and one wonders why readers capable enough to read poststructuralist enthnography need such "help" in getting the point. Again I ask, who are the intended readers? Personally, I could have done without all the constant summarizing and explications of methodolgy (which take up at least a third of the text) and done with more ethnographic observations of the women represented. One of the main women in the book deals privately in the real estate market in Seoul, for example, but there is little discussion of the networks she navigates while undertaking such work, focusing instead largely on her familial relations. For a book arguing that the division between the personal and the social is artificial, such an ommision is unsatisfying to say the least.
I also found the theme of "melodrama" insufficiently explored. Clearly melodrama is one of the most popular film and TV genres in Korea, and Korean society is indeed often melodramatic (witness weeping politicians hurling shoes in the National Assembly just a few months ago, televised around the world). This is an intriguing framework through which to view Korean society, yet the theoretics of melodrama as well as its application to Korean society and the women in the book are cursory and remain largely unexplored. Again, I would have preferred less self-conscious explication of methodology, and more solid theoretical insights.
One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the emphasis on retelling the stories and narratives of mobility of these women, as originally told to the author. Strip away the academic elements, the theory and emphasis on detailing methodology, and the book comes to resemble a novel of sorts, or at least a collection of interrelated short stories. I had no luck finding this book in Korea and had to order it online. Adopting more overtly the techniques of narrative, or at least restraining somewhat the distracting "academic" elements, would no doubt guarrantee a much wider readership in the future--which such individuals as appear in this book truly deserve. But then again, I am not an academic, so what do I know? If you're going to play that game, I guess you have to play by those rules.

      On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, just five days after the end of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by a bitter Confederate sympathizer named John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln became an instant martyr, immortalized as the "The Great Emancipator."

     After Lincoln's assassination, the commonest of men tried to fill the gigantic void. Andrew Johnson, a self-educated tailor from Tennessee, became the 17th President of the United States, and the first to enter office after the murder of his predecessor. Rising above an impoverished childhood, Johnson was truly a self-made man, learning a useful trade and developing his own successful business. At the same time, he rapidly ascended the poltical ladder--Alderman, Mayor, State Legislator, Congressman, Governor of Tennessee, United States Senator, Military Governor of Union-occupied Tennessee, Vice-President, and President of the United States.

As the only lawmaker from the South to remain in Congress after the outbreak of the Civil War, Andrew Johnson was the ultimate "Loyalist." In recognition for his dedication to the Union, Johnson was nominated as Abraham Lincoln's running mate in the 1864 presidential election. Barely a month into his vice-presidency, Johnson was thrust on the center stage of America politics.

      After Lincoln was murdered, the tailor from Tennessee ascended into the unenviable position of succeeding a legend. Johnson's obstinancy and rigid interpretaion of the Constitution soon placed him at odds with the Republican congression leadership and the national press. The bitter chasm widened as the Johnson presidency lurched forward, and ultimately led to his being the first President in American history to be impeached by the House of Representatives. By a single vote, Johnson avoided conviction by the Senate, and forfeiture of of office.

     After narrowly surving this constitutional crisis, Johnson's historical legacy was irrevocably damaged, and his hopes for an elected term as President were dashed. Returning to Tennessee after his presidency, Johnson was determined to return to political office. In remarkable fashion, he was elected to the United States Senate, marking the first and only time that a former President has returned to serve in that legislative body. Ambitous, lacking humility, and largely humorless, Johnson was unable to tolerate criticism. He angrily attacked his foes, once likening himself to Christ on the Crucifix. His combative personality and intemperate remarks readily allowed his enemies to portray him as vindictive and unstable.

Jeffrey K. Smith is a physician and author. A native of Enterprise, Alabama, he received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Alabama. After completing his residency at the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, he entered private practice in upstate South Carolina. Dr. Smith lives in Greer, South Carolina with his wife Anne. They are the proud parents of two sons, Andy and Ben. Dr. Smith is the author of three murder-mystery novels and six works of non-fiction. Another Great Book by Dr. Smith

This is an entertaining and well written book about Andrew Johnson. Born into abject poverty and forced to work at a very early age, the self-educated and shrewd Johnson achieved amazing success in both business and politics. Never one to back away from confrontation, Johnson's stubborness eventually cost him an elected term as President and opened the door for hard line northern politicians to implement harsh post war policies in the former Confederate states. Dr. Smith's book tells the story of the tumultous life and times of one of the South's most controversial figures. A very good read that is sure to enlighten.

Great insight into Andrew Johnson

I have read several books on Andrew Johnson and have to say this is by far the best. History has painted Johnson poorly and this book puts Johnson in a better perspective then many of the other books. Highly recommend. A good read for finding out what happened after Lincoln was killed and how Johnson tried to help bring the Union back together. Look forward to reading more books Dr. Smith.

The Loyalist

This book portrays Andrew Johnson's life, beliefs, and actions as president following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. As a lover of history I found this book intriguing and enlightening. During the difficult times of Andrew Johnson's presidency it is amazing to me that the country survived. Johnson endured the contempt of many Americans including many in Congress which dealt him the blow of impeachment. He was a southerner and yet stood with the north on preserving the union and protecting the constitution. Through this book, I gained an understanding of Johnson's character and strength and have a picture of a man who was thrust into an extremely difficult situation through no fault of his own.

I feel like this is a hard subject to teach

Although the book seems to attempt to demonstrate how one would go about designing, selecting materials, manufacturing, marketing, safety, etc. Its really not easy to grasp such concepts without hands one experience or involvement. The book is easy to read and does provide some really good detail on benchmarking materials, intellectual property / patents, and safety. It just doesn't seem like you can teach design even if you attempt to do it through concepts and case studies. Also the book suggest design via a materials approach but this is misleading because it doesn't look at it from a material science viewpoint rather what materials are available with this property at what cost.
