a Master with Beginner Mindset
By Victoria
What happens when an acknowledged Tarot Professional goes back and adapts the Beginner Mindset? A masterpiece such as this book is. Barbra Moore speaks simply yet informatively and very, may I say so, "engagingly" of complex matters of which the card meanings, though representing the core of this book in volume, are NOT the core of the book in meaning.

"Well, what is "the core" then?" -- you ask. In my opinion, it is the calm excitement of a true Professional who knows what it is like to be the one with the cards; who knows what it is like to lift the veil of the unknown both in predicting the future and trying to understand oneself and one's circumstances; it is the gratitude for one's long and not always easy way and desire to take a Beginner by hand and walk them straight through the bushes of being confused by choices and dry benches of lack of confidence onto the path that leads to the field of Mastery. And the Field of Mastery, as we know, has no end, but it is the Journey and Exploring that matters.

When a friend gifted me this book (THANK YOU!!!!!) I thought: "oh, well, another book for beginners" and trust me, I have read many of them. After all, nothing compares with actually spending time with the cards. But nonetheless, the design was SO attractive, the highlighting inside drew attention to the professionally explained (because they were LIVED by the author) cards' core meanings, the familiar pictures of the Universal Waite, Legacy of the Divine and Shadowscapes decks called me into the book. And boy was I glad they did! Assumptions and judgments, inevitably associated with cards' meanings are vanishing in this book. It is non-threatening and intellectual: such "scary" for the beginners cards like The Devil or The Tower are lifting up the veil of scariness and opening their deep, subconscious meanings: "A choice, action or situation contrary to your best interests" for the former and "An unexpected event that changes everything" for the latter. Along with the core meanings Barbara dives deep into the cards from the three decks she used for this book. I have to say, that both the Legacy of the Divine and the Shadowscapes decks have had Barbara Moore's influence onto their lives! I think you can learn more about it from other sources; I will concentrate on the review.

The Minor Arcana cards are presented in the same practical format. Initially, I did not like that the Court Cards are clustered together in their own section, all Pages, all Knights, all Queens and all Kings together rather than following the 1-10 cards of their correspondent suits. But it made sense: it is easier to compare and understand the court cards, usually called "the most difficult to interpret". Well, not with Barbara's book. It is simple and direct, like "The Knight of Wands is someone whose actions in this situation are fired by his will. He has something very specific he wants to achieve; he very much wants to have his way and will stop at nothing to get it. The knight is all hepped up and passionate about something, and he may needlessly run roughshod over anyone in his way. If his will is in sync with the querent's, he will be...." and so on.

The Finding More Meaning section of the book introduces the reader to the techniques that bring meaning and depth to the reading. Secrets of the Suits, Numbers, Elemental Dignities, Reversals, Significators smoothly run into Adding Something Extra: creating a Sacred Space, application of final questions and cards, practical how-to's on taking care of your decks, and finally, the section I found the most enchanting: Developing Your Skills. The series of exercises given there will be much useful for any Tarot Reader, even the one who's been working with cards for decades. Multiples and Combinations are presented in easy-to-understand format, taking, as usually with Barbara's book, all the difficulty out of them.

Spreads, sample readings, practical tips on working with a journal are adding to the attraction of this book in the eyes of any Beginner, desiring to be guided by a Professional who truly understands and values the Beginner Mindset.

I recommend this book for every new-born Tarot Enthusiast out there.

Not Just For Beginners
By Theresa Reed
Even though I have been reading tarot for many years, I still read a lot of tarot books. And you may be surprised to hear that I read plenty of beginner's books. The reason why is this - each author has a different take or method for learning tarot and I am always finding new ways to understand the cards. A beginner's book often will be written clearly without some heady esoteric mumbo jumbo (which I enjoy on occasion) and this lends to clear, practical insights.

Barbara Moore has delivered such a book with her newest offering, Tarot For Beginners. The writing is crisp and easy to follow - there is no arcane murky language here to contend with, making this book ideal for anyone who wants to delve into tarot but felt intimidated.
She sets a great foundation by covering all the basics without hard and fast tarot "rules". This creates an energy that allows the reader to have a strong base but still room to be an individual with their own unique voice. Moore offers interpretations for each card along with a "core concept" - which is a short, pithy statement that defines the core meaning of the card. This is a great idea and gives a beginner a simple easy to remember sentence, which makes it simpler to grasp and retain the basic interpretation. I love the extended interpretations as well but the core concept is a brilliant idea - and ideal for budding tarot readers.

Moore also lovingly covers all the basics - numbers, Major Arcana, Minor Arcana, suits, elements, Court cards, spreads, history, different readings styles and more. This is a lot of information to digest, but once again, her friendly relaxed tone makes it easy to understand.

My only critique: There are three different decks featured in the book - Rider Waite, Shadowscapes, and Legacy of the Divine. Some readers will appreciate it (especially those who do not read with the Rider Waited deck) but I felt this was a bit unnecessary and somewhat distracting for me (my brain prefers to focus on one thing at a time - too many things to look at makes me a bit dizzy). However, this is simply a matter of taste and not a major issue.

I do a lot of teaching and I especially like working with beginners. I am going to heartily recommend this to all of my students. It makes a great manual! But even old hats like me will find something useful here. So don't let the "beginner" title hold you back from grabbing a copy.

I give this book 2 Swords Up. Get it, devour it and start shuffling!

Honda CB750 Four, by Rod Ker

In the 1960s, Japanese motorcycle manufacturers were eating into the markets in Europe and the United States with genuinely new designs and modern technology. In 1968, Honda dropped its four-cylinder bombshell in the form of the CB750, complete with electric starter, five-speed gearbox and front disc brake. More than that, it offered speed, convenience, reliability and oiltightness, features that were normally mutually exclusive. The first ‘superbike’ had arrived. In this book, Rod Ker tells the story of the Honda CB750 and its development during the 1970s. The author also covers the Four’s subsequent rebirth as a classic, its present iconic status and includes buying advice for the twenty-first century.

A good quick read
By David Rodgers
I have loved the CB750 since I first saw one as a kid back in the early 70's. This book does a good job of covering the 750 though I wish the author spent more time covering the early years of development. As an owner of a 2014 CB1100 I appreciate the closing chapter of the book. A very enjoyable and quick read.

Video Game Art, by Nic Kelman

By 2008 most analysts predict that the video game industry will be larger than the film and music industries combined. Games today already command Hollywood budgets and teams of dozens of artists, writers, musicians, and designers...and yet almost nothing has been written about their art and design from a non-technical viewpoint.

Video Game Art is a first look from an art history and post-modern cultural perspective at the influences behind, and achievements of today s genre-defining video games. Examining themes such as character, environment, and the growing place of video games among more traditional art forms, and including commentary from luminaries of the field and often unpublished behind-the-scene art of both past and upcoming games, Video Game Art is a pioneering foray into what promises to be the dominant art form of the coming century.

Review
"In the new book Video Game Art, author Nic Kelman argues that games have made the leap from entertainment to art the same way cinema has -- with intricate plots, highly developed fictional worlds and complex characters."

Decent/lofty ideas... but critically lacking...
By ant_man
The trouble starts early. There is an apologetic preamble which states that the author(s) would not dedicate precious space to titles that which are well known and well documented beyond the gaming community. This is an enormous assumption about the general public's knowledge - both of video games and more-so it's history of design. Many people that have heard of these games or have seen their children watch the TV-spinoffs, most likely would not be able to identify what the games actually look(ed) like.

Even though Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Defender, Asteroids, Missile Command, Frogger, etc. are mentioned briefly there are no images of these classic games for us to (a) review and recognize, and (b) learn from. If this is supposed to be a sort of retrospective of the graphic art of game design (this is not about studies of techniques for rendering) then why not show some of these all-time classics as well as the 'new-time' classics? The latter are better represented but some of the choices and omissions are rather questionable. The brief smattering of 'classics' that are shown tend to represent more human and figurative character styles in games rather than 'iconic' which to me lacks in breadth of representation.

Beyond this, much of the work - but not all - feels and looks rather 'same-y' to me. Lots of brooding dark scenes and characters inspired by countless horror/goth/fantasy masters. When there is mention of games that are actually considered contemporary-art on display at world-famous museums, such as "Rez," -- we are not shown ANY images of these because space was taken up by two nearly identical renderings of Lara Croft in the same spread. At this point one has to ask oneself: what was the author/picture editor thinking?

For all the long-winded talk in the intro there is little to show us where the industry came from versus where we are now. And from what I can tell, there is absolutely no mention of the explosion of games and unique designs being done in FLASH - arguably one of the largest and least expensive environments for making accessible games and game 'art'. Furthermore, all the games covered and discussed (that I can tell) are from large corporations and studios. What of independent developers?

My biggest problem with this book was the editing - particularly with regard to choices of art. Far too many examples if things that look similar versus examples of unique design concepts and forms. Very nice printing, some nice layouts, and even some interesting topics are raised with relation to character concept, versus form, versus environment - but I would not recommend this for critical graphic design, "art" analysis, or a balanced representation.

Credits please?
By Marc Hudgins
A very nice book. It goes a long way in demonstrating both the depth and breadth of this newest of visual mediums; treating it with the respect it deserves. There is a lot of work that goes into creating the dazzling visuals many gamers may take for granted, or worse, criticize in ignorance of the technological limits game artists work with.

I must confess I am biased as I am one of those artists toiling in the game development business. One of my images and a substantial quote of mine is used in the text of the book. Sadly however, credit is not given to me or any of the nameless, faceless artists whose work is so lovingly showcased. As a game artist, I would love to know who created this work both for my personal edification as well as for reference for future hiring potential. Obviously, some images represent the work of many artists and programmers, however, a large amount of the work included in this book was created by individuals who deserve credit. What crediting there is, is given only to the marketing executives and companies who delivered the work to the author. For all of its effort to showcase the artistic merit of video games, this book fails to recognize those who create the art, only crediting the corporate entities who paid for it.

Still, a worth while buy.

Meh.
By Jack
Nearly every single piece of art in this entire book is from XBOX or XBOX 360. Plus, most of the art really isn't all that good. As the other 2-star reviewer said, where's Frogger? Where's Zelda? More importantly, where are the Gamecube games with great graphics? Twilight Princess & Super Mario Sunshine had amazing graphics. I do not recommend this to any non-XBOX fanboys.

About the Author
Cari Hunter lives in the Northwest of England with her partner, two cats, and a pond full of frogs. She works full-time as a paramedic and dreams up stories in her spare time.

Cari enjoys long, wind-swept, muddy walks in her beloved Peak District and forces herself to go jogging regularly. In the summer she can usually be found sitting in the garden with her feet up, scribbling in her writing pad. She also loves hiking in the Swiss Alps and hanging out in various television fandoms. Although she doesn’t like to boast, she will admit that she makes a very fine Bakewell Tart.

A Very Good Reason to Read It.
By hellbound
This author's style of writing gives the reader a feeling of intimacy with the characters, as if you are part of their circle of acquaintances. Frequently the door is opened to the seamier side of life and the reader is subjected to the perspectives of what a medical professional and police officer sometimes have to face. It isn't pretty. Although there is violence, those parts of the narration are presented with such care as if to protect the reader from the harsher realities of life. I must admit I appreciated that, since I have imagination enough without needing the added extra of minute detail to colour my dreams of gore. Even though the subject of this book is in not pleasant, I found it less full-on than the other books this author has written. I don't quite know how I feel about that. Probably relieved, but still... I can't quite say something was missing, because I don't think it was. Just that the book was more tame. Thinking about that, I think what it is is that the book was realistic, as in the situations, as they are written in this book, are much more likely to occur than the circumstances in the other books by this author. When you think of it like that, then chills run down your spine. This could happen to any one of us.

Another great mystery from Cari Hunter
By BlueskyHiker
I waited 2 days after I bought this book to start reading because I knew I would sit down and not stop until I had finished the entire thing. It was well worth the wait. Outstanding character development. I am so looking forward to seeing where these characters go in upcoming stories. Believable well paced mystery. This book is a keeper. Buy it. Read it. Count the days until next installment.

2015 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention
By Elisa
"Very good craft. Great story. I would like to have seen more kickass in the heroine. A little to indecisive for my taste. But a great story idea that really grabs you about midway through.
I’d like to have seen the heroine force the issue a little more. The plot components are all there and in order. But the heroine could have made that flow a little faster, a little more captivating by rebelling every once in a while.
Setting is Excellent.
The reveal was a little slow on a few issues and, I believe, incomplete on others. The heroines’ father. How that impacted her decision making could have been developed a little more. And there were two specific times I wanted to grab the H and yell at her. Go do this now. You not doing this particular thing is out of character for you. The most important of the two was when they finally linked one person to the killings (Farley I believe) and everyone else gave up on the second victim (Rachel). And our H went home wounded and tired, all teary eyed, but she had a hunch or maybe a hope. She shouldn’t have given up. She should of fought Meg to the point of anger and continued the search on her own. In the dark. In the rain. Through the pain. That’s what makes our heroes heroic.
Great stuff. Nice flow. Very clean. Well edited. Only mention here would be using a lot of brand names. Especially products that a reader outside the UK may never have heard of before.
Great one. I will be finding another title by this author for personal reading."

A fabulous mystery, well grounded in setting, creepy and steadily paced, reminiscent of the television show Broadchurch.

Brilliant. This started out looking like another trudge through a cliché formula, then suddenly spun out into a hair-raising hunt. I'd go on about how good it is but I don't want to give away any surprises. A real surprise.

An excellent start into a new series oozing with brithisness and characters who run deep.
