I love this book and so do my friends!

This is a compact book of Catholic traditions, practices and prayers that my friends appreciate and put to use with their families and activities. It was invaluable on a Holy Land Pilgrimage because it is compact and convenient to carry in a purse or pocket and provides prayers that supported the sites we visited.
Better yet, it is updated to the new English translation of the Roman Missal, so the Holy Mass parts are current. A must have for every Catholic.

Paul Allen's newest edition is the definitive book on artist management for several reasons. Far beyond a "how to" tutorial on the basics of the business, he illuminates the nuances of managing client personalities and sizing up an artist's motivations, ambitions and vision. His real-world perspectives, experiences and practical advice on career guidance are essential reading for both prospective managers and artists. This is especially true because of the high caliber of sources Professor Allen uses; they are among the top names in the business. Paul's insider knowledge and discussion on power players, getting calls returned and networking to build relationships are worth the price of admission alone.

Extremely well-written and easy to follow, this edition is updated with timely new information on the relevant aspects of social media, the increasing impact of streaming vs. downloads/physical sales and the increasingly common "360" deals. It's an excellent overview for aspiring artists and managers alike, and it's full of advice and wisdom. Anyone studying this business would do well to begin their focused education here, if only to establish a working vocabulary for the industry. The end of each chapter provides an extensive list of resources for continued reading as well. If you read this, also read the books listed in the resource section of each chapter for an extensive self-education. There's nothing quite like a common vocabulary for efficient communication between all the facets of the music industry.

Great book got even better

This edition has a lot of new information and some helpful examples. If you enjoyed one of the earlier editions, I suggest that you get a copy of this new edition. I just recommended it to a young artist who is hunting for a manager. I'm sure that this will let him know what to look for in a manager. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE SITE THAT THE AUTHOR PROVIDES. It was fluff and easy, with no real climax or twists

As an avid mystery/suspense reader, Mary Higgins Clark has been on my list of must-read authors, but this was the first book of hers I've read…probably the last one, too.

The book starts off with a bang and promises an intriguing plot, but in my opinion it fails to deliver. As a recent widow working on a new cable series about true crime, Laurie gathers 4 old college friends together to be interviewed about an unsolved crime they were all witnesses/suspects to 20 years ago.

The author spends quite a bit of time developing their characters and possible motives, then rehashes them ad nauseum. The reasons why each "suspect" may have to murder the victim is repeated literally dozens of times. It's as if the author assumes the reader won't be able to remember each characters traits, past and possible motive. This book could have been trimmed whole chapters worth of writing and nothing would be lost but these repetitions.

This was a quick read that didn't involve any real thought. It was fluff and easy, with no real climax or twists. I also found annoying the way the writing seemed to jump from 3rd person to 1st and back again. A lot of the writing was inner questions a character thought or asked of themselves, but even though the book is written in 3rd person, the writing reverts too often to 1st in these inner dialogues, it got tiresome.

Be warned

I have never reviewed a book before and it takes a lot for me to criticise something, but I feel it's my duty to warn people not to spend money on this. I've read hundreds of books and I can honestly say this is the worst I've ever read. Based on all the five star reviews I kept thinking the weak plot and undeveloped characters were some kind of warm up and an incredible twist was coming....but instead things just got worse and worse. Every chapter felt like "Murder Mysteries for Dummies" with a helpful summary at the end to remind you who was under suspicion and why, and if the summary wasn't enough, the characters also engaged in stilted dialogue with each other (or sometimes even themselves) to refresh your memory again about who may have dunnit, just in case you forgot. That combined with the gaping plot holes (why would someone who was smothered with a pillow have strangulation bruises on their neck??), predictable love story and ridiculous "reveal" of the killer made this a miss from start to finish.

I feel horrible writing this but I wish I'd read a review like this before I bought it, so hopefully I can at least do one person a favour. I'm not sure what all the five-star reviewers are on - perhaps I've been spoilt reading amazing thrillers by the likes of Jo Nesbo lately, so this just felt like a children's book by comparison. Spend your hard earned cash on something else.

She is one of my favorite authors because her books are such fast reading ones -- no long drawn descriptions of things and she gets right to the heart of the matter. I recommend this book for those who want a fast-paced mystery. Not for those seeking an intricate and deep-thinking book.

This hot little novella had many things I definitely love:

a big, beefy, adorably insecure main character; a sleek, mysterious love interest; southern charme; musicians; and sizzling hot erotic tension.

It also had one of my biggest all time pet peeves, namely a really silly Big Misunderstandig as the main point of conflict.

Why then the rating (an a warmly recommended, too)?

Because of the writing. Beef’s 1st person POV narrative voice was so compelling, the story so fast-paced and concise, the characters so likeable–every single one of them, even the supportive ones–I couldn’t put it down. Loved this book.

If you’re looking for a short, sweet, hot, PWP holiday read, you can’t go wrong with this. (And it’s free–from Goodreads!)

a MUST read

I had a very hard time putting down this book. In fact, my husband had to come into our room and literally take my Kindle away because I was neglecting a bunch of important things I HAD to do. True story. So yes, it's that good!

For the first time, during a "love triangle," the female character didn't piss me off with her indecision or confusion. I actually felt sympathy for Laney and understood her hesitations. Evan was her best friend, her everything, since they were ten years old. He was the typical boy next door, hot, and an athlete. Very swoon worthy if I do say so myself. He was all she ever knew. Finally, during their senior year in high school, Evan came clean regarding his true feelings for Laney.

"Laney, you're that girl.. the one guys make up in their head when they put all the parts together to make one perfect girl."

Everything was perfect... until graduation. Their plan to go to the same university went out the window. Evan accepted a football scholarship to their dream university while Laney never got her acceptance letter.
Being a very 'realistic' person, Laney decided to break things off (relationship wise) with Evan. But they still decided to keep in touch has best friends.

At her new school, Laney meets her super awesome friends a.k.a 'The Crew' whom I absolutely LOVED! Their dialogue definitely added humor to the story line. One of those new friends, was the one and only, Dane - total opposite of Evan. Well, minus the smokin' hot part, of course. He had the not-so-boy-next-door thing going on.. in more ways than one. He was very sweet with Laney yet not too sweet when need be. *wink*

"Um, Dane, have you been checking me out?" I blush.
"Only when I'm breathing."

Still having Evan in her life and now, Dane, Laney enters the emotional roller coaster of her life. And the way this book was written, I felt like I was right there with her.. right.. there. Having ALL point of views through out the book was a huge plus! I connected with all the characters.. Laney, Evan and Dane. Which, now that I think about it, in a way, it kind of made it worse when it came down to picking a side!!! hahaha! I went from Team Evan to Team Dane to Team Evan to Team Dane... all-through out-the-book

The things Evan said and did??? *sigh*

"I've waited half my life to take my princess to the ball, and it's been perfect. I want tonight to last forever, for everything to be that of her dreams."

"You never have to be without me, Laney, never. All I want is you; all I've ever wanted is you."

and then there was Dane.. *deep sigh*

"I want to take care of this girl, hold her, and make everything better. I want to be the reason she laughs, smiles, gasps.."

"You are a princess. I'll always see to that."

Holy mother of God!! Do you see??? For the life of me, I could not choose!!!! I love them both!!! oh, the pressure!!!! *even deeper sigh*

But yes, it all comes down to one. Laney... chooses... one.And OMG! that ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!All I can say regarding that is.. my heart??? yeah.. it SUNK!!!!!! Like literally, SUNK all the way down to my butt! Because even thought there is no relationship cliffhanger, holy hell, there is a HUGE plot cliffhanger!! I-NEED-BOOK-TWO!!!!

Un-put-down-able!!! Amazing read!!

I was a little apprehensive when considering purchasing and reading Emerge because of the love triangle and how strong of one it appeared to be. Well, I'm so glad that I gave it a shot! I started reading yesterday evening and I didn't stop until nearly 7 in the morning... yup, my body hates me today.
Laney is a very likeable female lead. She's just moving away from home for the first time, a place that has always been her security. Evan is Laney's best friend and has been for years. Near the end of her senior year at highschool, she and Evan reach a turning point in their relationship. Evan has lived through their friendship already in love with Laney and hoping that one day she'd share his feelings. When she does, it hits her hard. She lives through those summer months, in between highschool and college,afraid of the future. Evan and Laney were accepted into different colleges and she has a realistic outlook on the impact their distance may have on their relationship. So, they go into college, both wanting to be together, neither quite saying goodbye, but without labels or restrictions. You can truly feel the pain of their separation.
After some time, things get weird (I won't explain for spoilers sake) and she finds herself opening up to another man, Dane. Dane is what really hooked me on this story. I loved Evan, but Dane was just.... no words... haha. The tension between Dane and Laney is obvious, the attraction is obvious, the connection is obvious, but all of this leaves Laney feeling guilty and confused. Even if she and Evan aren't actually together any longer, she knows it will crush him.
Throughout the story, you see Laney struggle between carnal, raw feelings and an intense magnetism towards Dane. The connection between them is just as real as the one between her and Evan, just different, newer, and intense. And then there is her longtime friendship turned love towards Evan. He has her heart in a different way. It's not carnal, it's not raw, it's a security, a level of trust that only years of closeness can bring, it's that emptiness of feeling his distance when you're not together for the first time after years of rarely spending a day apart.
The ending left me a bit heartbroken, but that's expected in a love triangle, especially one this deep. With that said, I truly look forward to the next book. This was an AMAZING read! I love books that can truly make you feel on so many levels.

It's happened..

The day has come that FINALLY someone is tied sitting pretty at #1 with Kellan Kyle.. KK had a LONG 14 month run all by his lonesome as #1.. Some have come close.. But just not *quite* there.. You should know before moving on- I rate ALL Book boys on a Kellan Kyle scale.. So this is HUGE. HUUUUUUUUGE accomplishment. Not just ANY amazing book boyfriend can get to this level.. And let me tell you.. After reading Emerge- my KK scale is freakin tipping over and I am at a loss for words..

All poets, according to Wislawa Szymborska, are in a perpetual dialogue with the phrase I don't know. "Each poem," she writes in her 1996 Nobel Lecture, "marks an effort to answer this statement, but as soon as the final period hits the page, the poet begins to hesitate, starts to realize that this particular answer was pure makeshift, absolutely inadequate." As a self-portrait, at least, this is fairly accurate. From the beginning, Szymborska has indeed wrestled with the demon of epistemology. Yet even in her earliest poems, such as "Atlantis," she delivered her speculations with a human--which is to say, a gently ironic--face:

They were or they weren't.
On an island or not.
An ocean or not an ocean
Swallowed them up or it didn't.

Fifteen years later, when her 1972 collection, Could Have, appeared, Szymborska seemed to have made some major inroads into her notorious ignorance. Now she confessed to at least a shred of comprehension, stressing, however, that such knowledge has come at a terrible price: "We read the letters of the dead like helpless gods, / but gods, nonetheless, since we know the dates that follow. / We know which debts will never be repaid. / Which widows will remarry with the corpse still warm." And even in her most recent work, the poet continues to gravitate toward the admirable emptiness of, say, the clouds: "Unburdened by memory of any kind, / they float easily over the facts." Ultimately, though, the joke is on Szymborska, whose poems have grown more witty, more humane, and more tender--in other words, more knowing--with each passing year. View with a Grain of Sand remains an excellent point of entry to Szymborska's oeuvre, but Poems New and Collected is the place to go for a wide-angle view of this superlative and sardonic writer.

Wonderful, even in translation

The worst thing my Polish grandparents did was discourage their children from speaking Polish. Now, two generations removed from the language, I can only wonder at what Ms. Szymborska's astonishing work sounds like in her native tounge. The translators have done an admirable job of establishing a gentle sense of humor, a strong and steady voice in the English versions of these poems, which makes me long all the more to be able to read them in their original Polish.
Ms. Szymborska has that wonderful eastern European ability to show us that everything matters -- our words, our thoughts, our ancestors, our own mortality make us who we are, and who we are exists in an eternal Now. "Life, however long, is always short," she writes, "too short for anything to be added."
Perhaps the most moving of these works is "In Broad Daylight," a fantastic portrait of the poet Krzysztof Baczynski, killed at age 23 during the Warsaw Uprising, as an old man, vacationing in the mountains, sipping soup, readng the paper. Ms. Szymborska shows us how these simple acts, what she calls elsewhere "commonplace miracles," are precious. We who live have an obligation to see the miracle in our very exisitence, to savor and to succor life.
Szymborska deserves to be widely read. This volume is highly recommended.

The best translators of Szymborska, ever.

Szymborska has long been a favorite of mine. I have compared many different English translations of her poetry. The translators of this volume are by far the best. They make Szymborksa's poetry flow effortlessly, seamlessly. This is a a rare and wonderful poetry book.

Each of these poems is totally exactly within its own language. Szymborska is a very clear-cut poet -- straightforward, simple. Her quiet humor is exemplified in the beginning of her Nobel acceotance speech. "They say that the first sentence of any speech is always the hardest. Well, that one's behind me." After that, for the rest of this book, her poems are very concise & wonderfully thoughtful. Lucid. This is welcoming poetry.
