About the Author
John Edmond (Jack) Sparling (June 21, 1916 - February 15, 1997) was a Canadian - American comics artist. Sparling was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but moved to the United States as a child. He received his early arts training at the Arts and Crafts Club in New Orleans, and later attended the Corcoran School of Art. He worked briefly as a gag cartoonist for the New Orleans Item-Tribune. In 1941 Sparling, along with writers Drew Pearson and Robert S. Allen, created the comic strip Hap Hopper, Washington Correspondent. The strip premiered in 1939; Sparling drew the strip until 1943, when he was succeeded by Al Plastino.

Very nicely illustrated, all-color

Very nicely illustrated, all-color, version of Robin Hood. It is comics and so there is some reduction in text, but the author still preserved the original English (thou- thee) which is nice (and also makes it tad harder to read for my little guy who is beginning reader). All in all, very well nice way to retell classics and I'd buy again.

A Disappointing Companion to Just Me and My Dad

My little brother (now in his 30s) grew up to Mercer Mayer's Just Me and My Dad and Just For You. I bought those last year for our then-one-year-olds and was delighted that they were just as wonderful as I remembered. I ordered Just Me and My Mom recently and I'm so disappointed with the content. Unlike Just Me and My Dad, which has a sweet and happy story line, this book is just about Little Critter doing things he's not supposed to and people getting mad.

And, call me a feminist if you will, but I felt slighted by this book's treatment of the mom. Just Me and My Dad is all about an awesome camping trip little critter goes on with his dad, while Just Me and My Mom is all about this poor kid getting dragged to a bunch of boring museums where he's not allowed to touch things (and one with a bunch of lame pictures), and then a dress store with his mom. In fact, my husband was reading it to the kids the other night and I heard him flipping back through the pages, muttering to himself, "When was this WRITTEN?"

Shockingly, 1990. Feels more like the 1950s. And not that sexy John Hamm sort of way.

Fun read for kids and adults alike!

I loved the Little Critter books when I was growing up, and this is the first book I bought to read to my infant daughter. I get wonderfully nostalgic reading it to her and talking about how my mom used to read these books to me. Colorful pictures make it fun for even babies to look at. There's a lot of fun in them for adults as well, the looks on the mom's face is priceless! I didn't catch her exhaustion and frustration when I was a kid.

Bitter Memories

This story was a second chance at love between two people who meet and separated years before. Tanya and Alejandro parted during an argument. He seemed to disappear. She learned that he had gone back home to marry the woman he told her he wasn't in love with and proceeds to have a child with. So she marries someone else. Now she is a widower and went to the island of his where her sisters now works. Will the past bring them together or separate them forever. Margaret Mayo is not a Harlequin either I am familiar with. But will check out more of her works later.

TOM FAUSTMAN is a retired Senior Vice President from a Fortune 100 company. As a graduate of West Chester University, PA with a degree in English Literature, Tom authors a monthly wine newsletter “WineLore” and pursues his career as a novelist. A Vietnam Veteran, Tom spent his childhood on the courts of Drexill Hill, PA playing basketball. He lives with his wife on a farm and orchard in South Glastonbury, Connecticut, where they are surrounded by their three children and six astounding grandkids.

Good plot; good scene descriptions; great interior dialogue; and hilarious Philly banter

What a fun read!! My brother told me about this book and then mailed it last week with the comment ... "a gripping page-turner that you won't be able to put down".

"Dylan's Monster" turned out to be all that and more. I was delighted to find that that many of the novel's characters have a depth not normally associated with crime novels and scene descriptions that evoke the authentic Philadelphia of my youth. In addition, the clever organization of the novel -- each section is headed by a character's name -- propels the narrative and plot forward while allowing digressions to describe some very amusing fraud schemes that Faustman no doubt experienced while working for the insurance industry.

Most striking for me, however, is Faustman's uniquely 'clean & concise' narrative style. The ultra-lean prose seems to have its own strict grammar rules that enable the author to pack lots of substance into each page. Dylan's own clipped interior dialogue sound like (I imagine) real crime investigators think.

I've been told that it often takes many tries before an author finds his own authentic "voice", but I sense Faustman got it right his first time out of the gate. At least I hope it's his first book; I'm looking forward to Dylan's next adventure. Move over D. Hammett and Raymond Chandler!!

Full disclosure: For about 20 years our family lived right next to the Faustman family in Drexel Hill, a western suburb of Philadelphia. I clearly recall watching the younger "Tommy" practice his jump shot for hours after school on our backyard driveway basketball court. I also grew up with many of the people upon which the novel's characters are based. But I haven't seen or spoken to Tom Faustman or many of those characters in nearly half a century because I went off to the Peace Corps (Africa) and then to Vietnam, and never really returned to the Philadelphia area. Until I read his book I didn't even know that Tom Faustman was an MP in Vietnam; for all I know we served there at the same time [I was in the Mekong Delta working for the US Consulate]. So it was a delight to read his novel and become re-acquainted with the Tom Faustman/Dylan character and some of the other familiar characters in the story -- "The Jimmer", "Gator", "Tony Sol" and many others from the old neighborhood.

Some say that if the plot is good enough it will make for good scenes and for good dialogue. Dylan's Monster has a good plot, good scene descriptions, and great, fully-drawn characters. Oh yeh, and there's that authentic, hard-boiled, Philly repartee that many reviewers, including me, found very amusing. That type of tough-love, New Jersey Soprano's, 'bustin' balls' banter must be hardwired into my genes because it all seemed very familiar and natural to me.

Great story...couldn't put it down!

I admit to having a penchant for reading about serial killers. I find them fascinating from a psychological standpoint. However, I rarely read a book with this topic that had me laughing out loud and so absorbed with the other characters!

Faustman's writing is similar to James Patterson's from the suspense angle, but much more humorous with its fleshing out of the various characters. His irreverence is refreshing and totally realistic. I only hope he writes more books. "Dylan's Monster" is a true joy to recommend to anyone...get this book!

Dylan's Monster is a masterful mix of suspense and humor. Dylan returns from Viet Nam and secures a job as a claim investigator and that is where the fun and terror begin. From the psychopathic shopkeeper to the entertaining neighborhood characters, Dylan's Monster will keep you spellbound. This is one of those books that you don't want to put down, you can't wait to turn the page and you never want to end.
