Nazareth Family Spirituality: Celebrating Your Faith at Home, by Catherine Doherty

Bring your home and family life to Christ!
Catherine Doherty, foundress of Madonna House and best-selling author of the award-winning spiritual classic Poustinia, talks straight to families in this compilation by one of her spiritual sons, MH priest Fr. Blair Bernard.

Catherine first talks about Christ s hidden Nazareth years , which made up most of his earthly life, and which prepared him for the three years and three days which would change the world. She elaborates on the profound spiritual significance of these years, not only for the Lord, but for each of us and our families.
With the Nazareth years as her point of departure, Catherine discusses the ways families can connect their ordinary lives with God. For her, Nazareth is that hidden little village [where we] become whole again. As the title of this book indicates, Nazareth is a whole way of life, especially in its hiddenness. For hidden is the life that most of us live. In simple, chatty chapters, Catherine demonstrates the spiritual depth of the hidden vocation of marriage and family: to form a community of love.
The book also presents practical ways of passing on the faith, to celebrate it particularly for and with children. The unique and beautiful cycle of the church year customs celebrated in Madonna House is here adapted for use in your home. Over the years the MH community has drawn these customs from the East and the West, and from various countries; they have stood the test of time in their communication of the joys as well as the truths of our faith.
Catherine discusses of various issues in family life: teen dating, the loneliness of living a faith life in a secular world, parents as co-creators with God, various difficulties of wedded life. Catherine introduced to her community of Madonna House a Russian idea of unity called sobornost ; here she presents this idea of sobornost as a goal for family life as well. And fearlessly she addresses the end of life in the section Til Death Do Us Part , completing the cycle of a life lived in the Lord.
Nazareth Family Spirituality provides much food for families to digest, families whose sanctity and integrity is so questioned in our day and age. It also gives much encouragement to live a life of faith in our modern world.

Review
In this book, we find a collection of Gospel reflections, some never before published, as well as liturgical customs and traditions to help bring Nazareth alive in Catholic families and homes.
The friendly, conversational tone of the book draws you in to experience the heart of Nazareth, and it gives you the feeling that Catherine is alongside you offering encouragement and love.
Nazareth is a place where growth in holiness and love of God through ordinary everyday life can happen, as Catherine connects the various aspects of Nazareth to modern Catholic family life. Her winsome way of putting things even deep spiritual truths gives great encouragement.
These reflections can be an inspiration to young couples as well as to those who have been married for many years. This book can also be a resource for study, individually or in a group.
The traditions from Madonna House are presented in such a way that they can be easily adapted to Catholic homes. Through such things as food and decorations, these customs bring to life the richness of the faith.
This book is a treasury of love, wisdom and celebration from the heart of Catherine Doherty. It is a treasury that presents a way of passing on the faith that is accessible and vibrant. Through it, families can find healing and joy. --Sue Atkinson

About the Author
Asked once for the essence of her spiritual life, Catherine answered, Always to do the will of God as revealed by people and circumstances. After much suffering, struggle and surrender through these people and circumstances , Catherine became what her Russian forebears would call a staritza, a Spirit-filled teacher and guide of the interior life. People were attracted to her as someone who radiated a palpable knowledge of God and His love that did not come from books, but rather from her own experience.
Catherine was born in 1896 to Theodore and Emma, members of the minor Russian nobility, and the Orthodox Church. Catherine married Boris de Hueck at 15, and soon they both were caught up in World War I, where they served as nurse and engineer. Before the war was over, the Bolsheviks had come to power in Russia, and as hated members of the aristocracy, Catherine and Boris had to escape, first to Finland, then to England where Catherine became a Roman Catholic and finally to Canada, where their son George was born.
With her husband unable to support the family, for some years Catherine found herself working at various menial jobs through which she experienced the grinding poverty of the working poor.
Then through a providential series of circumstances, she worked in the Chautauqua, telling stories of her life in Russia throughout the U.S. and Canada. As a speaker, she mesmerized her audiences, and became wealthy again. She eventually became an executive and traveled widely to meet leading celebrities of the early twentieth-century, such as G.K. Chesterton and George Bernard Shaw.
But she found herself haunted by the words in the Gospel, Go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor... and come, follow me (Mk 10:21). With the blessing and help of Toronto s Archbishop, during the Great Depression she opened a street-front soup kitchen and meeting place she named Friendship House .
Falsely accused of being a communist, she had to close Friendship House. But in 1938, she began anew in Harlem, New York, serving the blacks who lived there. Through her work, and lectures throughout the country, Catherine pioneered in racial justice before it was fashionable or safe to do so.
Catherine's vision grew, and she saw the work in racial justice as only one of many others open to the laity there were no restrictions. But members at that time wanted to concentrate on racial justice and outvoted Catherine. She then moved to Combermere, Canada, in 1947 and began a work she named Madonna House. She had married again in 1943, to Eddie Doherty, a famous newspaper reporter.
In Combermere, people came to join her work, and eventually Madonna House became a community of lay men, lay women, and priests living promises of poverty, chastity, and obedience, engaged in a variety of spiritual and corporal works. (Catherine and Eddie took the same promises, and from that time lived apart. Catherine said it made them even more one.) Such a group was unheard of at the time, and foreshadowed the new ecclesial communities of the 21st century Catholic Church. Madonna House continues in Combermere, its headquarters, and in houses throughout the world.
Catherine experienced some of the major events of the 20th century, including two World Wars and the Russian Revolution. She knew wealth and poverty; she knew rejection and loneliness. She knew the pain of an abusive husband, lived as a single mother, and then found happiness in her second marriage, even after the promise of celibacy. She welcomed the changes in the Catholic Church while staying faithful to it; and she shared the treasures of her Russian spirituality. Catherine led a most extraordinary life, written up in a number of biographies.
She died at 89 on December 14, 1985. Her cause for canonization has been introduced, and she can be called "Servant of God".

Excellent quick reference on cult belief systems
By Jeffrey R. E. Morgan
Find It Quick is a book that should be in every Christian apologist's arsenal. It is a quick reference that lists 40 different cults / religions and their beliefs. Whether you are just beginning to learn what other religions believe or you need to brush up on the specifics of any one religion this book aims to provide a quick, concise definition of each.

The descriptions of each of the cults / religions beliefs are written in a logical, easy to understand way which helps in the process of defending Christianity and knowing how to share my faith with someone whose beliefs differ from my own.

Each of the definitions categorize the different groups in the areas of The Bible, God, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, Humanity, Sin and Salvation, Death and the Afterlife, Angels and Demons, Church-Related Issues, Prophecy, Truth, among others.

I found this book extremely helpful in my quest for quickly breaking down the beliefs of a cult / religion into a manageable size. This book helped me to realize Christian Scientists believe, "The human Jesus is not the divine Christ. Jesus, a mere human, embodied the Christ, which constituted the divinity of the man Jesus." (p.60).

This is a marked departure from Biblical Christianity which affirms, "but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." John 20:31 (NKJV)

At the end of each chapter are "Apologetic Power Points". These are a list of items that sum up the differences between Biblical Christianity's beliefs and those of a particular group. One of the great strengths of the book are the power points as they quickly let anyone see how Biblical Christianity differs from the studied group.

Each of the power points are spoken of in detail in the last chapter of the book. There are a total of 118 used throughout the book as they relate to each group. My only minor criticism is with the way in which the power points are listed at the end of each chapter.

In the case of Unitarian Universalism, chapter 37, one of the power points is "Universalism is False". How this specifically relates to Unitarianism is never explained. I point this out because it is also not explained how it specifically relates to the Unification Church which is in chapter 36.

I would have liked to see each power point explained in the containing chapter as it relates to the specific cult / religion. I must admit that this would probably have made the book 2 to 3 times larger.

I highly recommend this book to any apologist. One of the things any apologist cannot do without is information. This book will definitely help all Christians in defending our faith by making it easier to explain the differences between what we believe and what others believe.

Very informative.
By K. F. Pete
This book comes from an author who I very much recommend. The book is more suited to be a quick reference guide to cults more than world religions. Information regarding cults, such as Mormons and JW's, range from their history to their beliefs. Included in the back of the book is a list of 118 cult beliefs and practices that are refuted using scripture. Though the book does not deal with world religions it is a handy reference guide to cults and religious sects.

Does the job quite well
By John Wolf
I run a website and also do a bit of evangelism/apologetics. One of my tasks is to dialogue and or send letters to the cults, and false churches in my area (Denver, CO) of which I have no small task. This book is perhaps the best for giving a overall synopsis of the major cults. While this book does not address Progressive Liberal "Christians" (Gay/Homosexual), the emerging church, the word of faith movement, and such I have other books that touch those groups. So for the task this book has set out to accomplish I absolutely love it and find it superior to my other books on the topic (So Whats the difference?, Josh McDowell book on the cults). The apologetic power points are especially helpful to defend Biblical Christianity. My major gripe of the book (despite all its praises) is a lack of a topical index in the back. Surely this would have been quite helpful. I recommend this book to not only the bible college student, but to those wanting some good information on the cults, but also those doing the same thing I am doing, and that is challenging the cults in their area and proclaiming Christ to them.

Basic Condition Reporting: A Handbook, by Southeastern Registrars Association

A good condition report is an accurate and informative account of an object’s state of preservation at a particular moment in time. Condition reports can have multiple functions such as recording the state of an object prior to an exhibition or loan, after exhibition or loan, to assist in collections planning, or as a tool for the treatment of an object. Most of these functions can be conducted by a registrar, curator, collections manager, or volunteer.

A good condition report fills many critical needs including:

  • Knowing the exact condition of an object before or after a loan
  • Helping staff determine the stability of an object for exhibit or loan
  • Limiting how often an object is handled
  • Informing object handlers of unseen problems
  • Showing the condition of an object over time to determine the rate of deterioration
  • Setting priorities for conservation
  • Assisting the staff in identifying similar objects
  • Aiding in the valuation of an object for insurance purposes

The fourth edition of Basic Condition Reporting: A Handbook proffers a standard vocabulary for all of the individuals in a museum that may be conducting condition reports. In an ideal world, everyone who does a condition report for an item would be trained in the exact same standards, use the same terminology, and use the exact same form, etc. However, the reality is that even if every registrar, collections manager, and curator in your institution does condition reports each report will be slightly different. Then you throw in every intern, volunteer, or student that may assist and you will find a variety of methods and terminologies that appear. This volume provide a baseline that all of these people can work from so that any person who opens the condition report can understand what the problems on a particular piece include.

Review
From the time the first edition of Basic Condition Reporting: A Handbook was published by the Southeastern Registrars Association, the book has proven to be an invaluable resource to any museum professional who manages collections. This fourth edition contains the latest information on material types, needs, and descriptive terms as well as object handling techniques. It is a 'must have' for book shelves, although it will prove to be so useful that it will not often reside on the shelf but will be in almost continuous use. (Martha Battle Jackson, Chief Curator at North Carolina State Historic Sites)

Everyone doing condition reports should have this at hand. The object handling notes are extremely helpful for even veteran collections managers. (Angela Kipp, collections manager, TECHNOSEUM, Mannheim, Germany, and co-founder and administrator of Registrar Trek)

Almost, but not entirely, unlike Douglas Adams.
By Paul Vader
I really wanted to like this - a satisfying and less downbeat ending to the hitchhiker books is certainly called for, since the original series ends extremely depressingly. And I don't think Adams intended to leave it like that.

Colfer occasionally, but not nearly often enough, captures some of the absurdity of the series, but never got the idea that the Hitchhiker's books (and in fact all of the late Douglas Adams' outstanding books) weren't so much science fiction, as a satire of literally everything, while loosely wearing a science fiction costume. This book fails to work on just about every level. In brief, avoid.

I really didn't want to believe the other reviews of this book. I thought, "well, at least it would be seeing the old characters again". However, I was very disappointed. The writer seemed to have read maybe 5% of Douglas Adams' original stories and cobbled together this. There are very annoying things about the book, but it completely lacks the author's wit or even storytelling. Sorry to say, I'm not a fan of this. I had to go back and re-read the originals to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

By Brian Murphy
If you are expecting to step back into the hitchhiker's guide world as so beautifully created by Douglas Adams then this book is not for you. Go back and reread the series again, you will find something new each time. However, with this book you are getting a sad attempt at trying to copy his humor which at its best is difficult to get comfortable with and seems a bit patronizing and at its worst reads like fanfiction. Save your money and read everything else by adams, the genius is gone and there is no recreating him but his work still entertains and inspires.

EVERY DAY THE SAME
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

UNTIL TODAY
And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2015: Intersecting, overlapping, not-quite-what-they-seem lives. Jealousies and betrayals and wounded hearts. A haunting unease that clutches and won’t let go. All this and more helps propel Paula Hawkins’s addictive debut into a new stratum of the psychological thriller genre. At times, I couldn’t help but think: Hitchcockian. From the opening line, the reader knows what they’re in for: “She’s buried beneath a silver birch tree, down towards the old train tracks…” But Hawkins teases out the mystery with a veteran’s finesse. The “girl on the train” is Rachel, who commutes into London and back each day, rolling past the backyard of a happy-looking couple she names Jess and Jason. Then one day Rachel sees “Jess” kissing another man. The day after that, Jess goes missing. The story is told from three character’s not-to-be-trusted perspectives: Rachel, who mourns the loss of her former life with the help of canned gin and tonics; Megan (aka Jess); and Anna, Rachel’s ex-husband’s wife, who happens to be Jess/Megan’s neighbor. Rachel’s voyeuristic yearning for the seemingly idyllic life of Jess and Jason lures her closer and closer to the investigation into Jess/Megan’s disappearance, and closer to a deeper understanding of who she really is. And who she isn’t. This is a book to be devoured. -Neal Thompson

“Like its train, the story blasts through the stagnation of these lives in suburban London and the reader cannot help but turn pages. . . . The welcome echoes of Rear Window throughout the story and its propulsive narrative make The Girl on the Train an absorbing read.”—The Boston Globe

“[The Girl on the Train] pulls off a thriller's toughest trick: carefully assembling everything we think we know, until it reveals the one thing we didn't see coming."—Entertainment Weekly

“Gone Girl fans will devour this psychological thriller. . . . Hawkins’s debut ends with a twist that no one—least of all its victims—could have seen coming.”—People

“Given the number of titles that are declared to be 'the next' of a bestseller . . . book fans have every right to be wary. But Paula Hawkins’ novel The Girl on the Train just might have earned the title of 'the next Gone Girl.”—Christian Science Monitor

“Hawkins’s taut story roars along at the pace of, well, a high-speed train. …Hawkins delivers a smart, searing thriller that offers readers a 360-degree view of lust, love, marriage and divorce.”—Good Housekeeping

“There’s nothing like a possible murder to take the humdrum out of your daily commute.”—Cosmopolitan

“This fresh take on Hitchcock’s Rear Window is getting raves and will likely be one of the biggest debuts of the year.”—Omaha World-Herald

“Hawkins’s tale of love, regret, violence and forgetting is an engrossing psychological thriller with plenty of surprises. . . . The novel gets harder and harder to put down as the story screeches toward its unexpected ending.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“A gripping, down-the-rabbit-hole thriller.”—Entertainment Weekly Hotlist

“The Thriller So Engrossing, You'll Pray for Snow: Send in the blizzards, because nothing as mundane as work, school or walking the dog should distract you from this debut thriller. A natural fit for fans of Gone Girl-style unreliable narrators and twisty, fast-moving plots, The Girl on the Train will have you racing through the pages."—Oprah.com

“It's difficult to say too much more about the plot of The Girl on the Train; like all thrillers, it's best for readers to dive in spoiler-free. This is a debut novel—Hawkins is a journalist by training—but it doesn't read like the work of someone new to suspense. The novel is perfectly paced, from its arresting beginning to its twist ending; it's not an easy book to put down. . . . . What really makes The Girl on the Train such a gripping novel is Hawkins' remarkable understanding of the limits of human knowledge, and the degree to which memory and imagination can become confused.”—NPR.org

“[L]ike Gone Girl, Hawkins's book is a highly addictive novel about a lonely divorcee who gets caught up in the disappearance of a woman whom she had been surreptitiously watching. And beyond the Gone Girl comparisons, this book has legs of its own.”—GQ.com

“Paula Hawkins’ thriller is a shocking ride.” –US Weekly
“An ex-wife indulges her voyeuristic tendencies in Paula Hawkins’s film-ready The Girl on the Train. In the post-Gone Girl era, crimes of love aren’t determined by body counts or broken hearts, but by who controls the story line.” –Vogue

“The Girl on the Train [is] a harrowing new suspense novel…a complex and thoroughly chilling psychological thriller… The Girl on the Train is one of those books where you can’t wait — yet almost can’t bear — to turn the page. It’s a stunning novel of dread.” –New York Daily News

“The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins is a psychologically gripping debut that delivers.” –The Missourian

“The Girl on the Train is the kind of slippery, thrilling read that only comes around every few years (see Gone Girl).” –BookPage

“Hawkins, a former journalist, is a witty, sharp writer with a gift for creating complex female characters.” –Cleveland Plain Dealer

“The Girl on the Train is as tautly constructed as Gone Girl or A.S.A. Harrison's The Silent Wife, and has something more: a main character who is all screwed up but sympathetic nonetheless. Broken, but dear. . . . No matter how well it's written, a suspense novel can fall apart in the last pages, with an overly contrived or unbelievable ending. Here, The Girl on the Train shines, with its mystery resolved by a left-field plot twist that works, followed, surprisingly, by what you might call a happy ending.”—Newsday

“I’m calling it now: The Girl on the Train is the next Gone Girl. Paula Hawkins’s highly anticipated debut novel is a dark, gripping thriller with the shocking ending you crave in a noir-ish mystery.” –Bustle

“Rachel takes the same train into London every day, daydreaming about the lives of the occupants in the homes she passes. But when she sees something unsettling from her window one morning, it sets in motion a chilling series of events that make her question whom she can really trust.”—Woman’s Day

“Hawkins’s debut novel is a tangle of unreliable narrators, but what will have readers talking is her deft handling of twists and turns and her eerily fine-tuned narrative. This is one creepy, dark thriller. . . . The book is smartly paced and delightfully complex. Just when it seems Hawkins is leading us one way, Rachel, Anna, or Megan change the game. Nothing can be taken for granted in The Girl on the Train, not even the account of the girl herself.”—Las Vegas Weekly

"Psychologically astute debut . . .  The surprise-packed narratives hurtle toward a stunning climax, horrifying as a train wreck and just as riveting."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“[A] chilling, assured debut. . . . Even the most astute readers will be in for a shock as Hawkins slowly unspools the facts, exposing the harsh realities of love and obsession's inescapable links to violence.”—Kirkus (starred review)

“intricate, multilayered psychological suspense debut, from a staggered timeline and three distinct female narrators. Rachel, who is unabashed in her darker instincts, anchors the narrative. Readers will fear, pity, sympathize and root for her, though she's not always understandable or trustworthy. . . . En route to a terrorizing and twisted conclusion, all three women—and the men with whom they share their lives—are forced to dismantle their delusions about others and themselves, their choices and their respective relationships.”—Shelf Awareness

"This month we're gearing up for Paula Hawkins's mystery The Girl on the Train. Its three narrators keep readers guessing as they try to suss out who's behind one character's shocking disappearance. Can you figure out who did it before they do?"—Martha Stewart Living

“What a thriller!”—People Style Watch

“Hawkins keeps the tension ratcheted high in this thoroughly engrossing tale of intersecting strangers and intimate betrayals. Kept me guessing until the very end.”—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of the Detective D. D. Warren series

“I simply could not put it down.”—Tess Gerritsen, New York Times–bestselling author of the Rizzoli and Isles series

“Gripping, enthralling—a top-notch thriller and a compulsive read.”—S. J. Watson, New York Times–bestselling author of Before I Go to Sleep

“Be ready to be spellbound, ready to become as  obsessed. . . . The Girl on the Train is the kind of book you’ll want to press into the hands of everyone you know, just so they  can share your obsession and you can relive it.”—Laura Kasischke, author of The Raising

“What a group of characters, what a situation, what a book! It’s Alfred Hitchcock for a new generation and a new era.”—Terry Hayes, author of I Am Pilgrim

“Artfully crafted and utterly riveting. The Girl on the Train’s clever structure and expert pacing will keep you perched on the edge of your seat, but it’s Hawkins’s deft, empathetic characterization that will leave you pondering this harrowing, thought-provoking story about the power of memory and the danger of envy.”—Kimberly McCreight, New York Times–bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia

What's the fuss?
By P. McGraw
It IS a page turner. You can read this book in one day, two at the most, and the plot drives the whole book. The unreliable narrators (there are two besides the main character) are as unlikable as they are unreliable, and there isn't a nice male in the book. Entirely plot driven; the characters are paper thin. You can figure out who-dunnit by the middle of the book. The ending is weak. I can't imagine what all the fuss is about, except that it is quick and there are lots of twists and turns, and you can't trust anyone to tell the truth.

ALCOHOLIC AMNESIA
By Red Rock Bookworm
THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is a dark, haunting and depressing psychological thriller, but it's incredibly effective thanks to the writing skills of author Paula Hawkins. Rachel is a divorced woman who would do anything for a drink, and like a lot of folks consumed by a love affair with the bottle, one might call her a victim of circumstances. Her husband Tom had an affair that resulted in a pregnancy. He divorced Rachel, married the "other woman" and now all three (husband, wife and child) are happily ensconced in the house that was once Rachel's.

The train that Rachel rides to London each day takes her past her old neighborhood. From the window of the train she observes not only her old garden that backs up to the tracks, but also the daily activities of another couple who reside down the street from her previous home. In her imagination she has given the couple names and has created a fairy tale love life for them. Real life, however, cannot live up to her fantasy and the couple does not have the picture perfect relationship that Rachel has concocted. When a murder occurs, Rachel becomes entangled in the investigation because of what she has witnessed on her daily commute.

This rather bleak story with intersecting timelines is told from the viewpoint of three different women Rachel, Anne and Megan. All the women are unreliable narrators with something to hide. In fact, most of the characters in this novel, including the men, lack veracity, and are a self-serving and unsympathetic group with plenty of skeletons in their closets.

Lest I continue and divulge too much of the plot, let me just say that the twists and turns in the story are many and readers will be easily drawn in, making it easy to devour this book in one afternoon.

Boring
By Amazon Customer
This was the most boring book I have ever read. According to my Kindle I managed 32% before I gave up. The character was lifeless, the story was lifeless and just meandered along at a snails pace. The premise was totally unbelievable unless the train moved at the same speed as the snail. No dialogue just endless narrative of something. Completely unreadable.
