About the Author
Jill Paperno is the second assistant public defender for the Monroe County Public Defender's Office in Rochester, New York. She has represented indigent defendants with the Public Defender's Office for over twenty-seven years, handling primarily violent felonies and drug offenses. She has tried many cases over the years, including sex offenses and homicides. Ms. Paperno has trained and supervised staff attorneys for over seventeen years, and assisted in developing the training program for her office. She is a frequent presenter at continuing legal education programs, lecturing on topics ranging from "The Nuts and Bolts of Criminal Defense" to "Strategies for Cross-Examining the Child Sexual Abuse Accommodation Syndrome Expert." She is a contributor to the New York Criminal Defense Blog at newyorkcriminaldefense.blogspot.com. In 2010 Ms. Paperno was awarded the Monroe County Public Defender's Jeffrey A. Jacobs award for outstanding trial work. In 2011 she received the Rochester Daily Record Nathaniel Award.

Great Resource for New Lawyers and Law Students

This book is mandatory reading in the law school Criminal Defense Clinic that I teach. As a law school professor and practicing criminal defense attorney, I was extremely impressed with the range of important topics that the book covers. Jill Paperno's Representing the Accused captures the essence of what every criminal defense attorney should know when representing clients in criminal matters. Her book accomplishes this task in an very thoughtful and easy to read manner. The book is a must read for every criminal defense attorney in the early stages of their practice and for law students who will soon be out in the real world representing clients of their own. Further, the book also offers tips and instruction that are extremely useful even for those who have been practicing criminal law for longer periods of time. Paperno's Representing the Accused is a great resource for any one looking to learn the ins-and-outs of criminal defense work and to elevate their own criminal defense practice.

A Helpful Resource

This book was pretty informative in terms of summing up the criminal defense practice of law. However, it did not contain everything I had hoped it would. While it gave a fairly good deal of general practice advice, it did not always get into the specifics of "how-to" that new attorneys can benefit from. Overall, though, it was helpful and I did pick up a few practice tips from it.

Understanding Crim Law

As an incoming 2L in law school, I thought I had a basic understanding of criminal law through some of my 1L courses. I was wrong. This book spells out everything you need to know and everything you need to do to be an effective attorney. Everything from file organization to subpoenas, this book will place you on the track to success. I am immensely more knowledgable now that I read this book!
