Kalamazoo for Days

Kalamazoo is raw, witty, and visceral. Winch writes with such passion that you can't help but be transported into the world he gives us: the world of a boy coming of age in the 70s in the funky, weird, and sometimes disguisting middle of this country. The antics of the narrator are often hilarious, and occasionally disturbing and even embarassing. You find yourself asking, over and over, "but WHY would you do that???" And yet...you can't help but love him just a little. This is an absolutely enjoyable and entertaining read.

A Great Experience

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Kalamazoo." The writing was gritty yet beautiful, and it pulled me right into the summer days of the narrator. Winch write from the heart and has a knack for opening up our eyes to the beauty and devastation around us. There were points that were touching and poignant, and others that were...maybe a little gross. A great read, nonetheless, and I highly recommend it.

Some people really know how to tell a story, and Winch certainly has that gift. You do not need to be from the Midwest, or have grown up in the 70's, to appreciate Winch's writing - it is raw and heartfelt. I read the zines, and was stoked to see it in book form... there are two others now, and I cannot wait to read them!

Great resource for Advocates and Survivors

I work with a group of volunteer domestic violence advocates. We go on scene with police officers to provide resources and support to domestic violence victims and their families. While rewarding, the calls can be stressful. Our advocates really appreciate the simple and sound advice in the book for staying present and reducing stress. Robin gives us really useful that we can apply right away. The brain-based science approach is great for those of us who are analytical.

I also meet with a group of young mothers who have experienced domestic and family violence. Their goal is to break the cycle of violence, but they have so few tools from their past. Robin's book is helping them learn new ways to understand their own anxiety and make choices about how they react - they are working hard at breaking the cycle of violence.

I've had the honor of seeing Robin in person. She's an engaging presenter. The book is equally accessible, informative, and written in a manner that you can take what's meaningful to you now. Later, another section may be more fitting.

Among all my texts in nutrition, biochemistry, diagnosis of nutrition related problems, and clinical application of biochemistry, I have returned to this text the most often. It has also been a fast reference for brushing up on obscure metabolic mysteries, useful for any practicing clinician.

I LOVED it!!

I absolutely loved Something About Lorelei by Sandi Lynn. You will fall in love with Lorelei and Hope and as much as you will hate Jack at first, you will love him too. I was not able to put this book down and devoured it as soon as I got it.
Lorelei is a single mom who due to tragedy is raising her 7 year old daughter Hope by herself with the help of her best friend Stella and her parents. She has been without a job for 2 months and was thrilled to get a job at Sutton Magazine. She did not let the fact that the CEO, Jack Sutton, had a reputation for being mean and running off all of his PA’s. Jack’s attitude is almost comical and you will be rolling at how Lorelei puts him in his place. Jack lets it be known that he doesn’t like children and he thinks women are for his pleasure. He will toss them out without a second thought. That was until he met Lorelei. She made him have more than second thoughts. Lorelei knows that Jack is some kind of trouble, but even knowing all this about Jack, he was sexy as sin and made her feel things and want to do things that she hasn’t done in over 7 years.
I loved watching the characters transform and become the fantastic leading characters that Sandi Lynn is known for. You will want to scream and claw Jack’s eyes out and then you will cry and swoon. I loved everything about this book!

Confused by reviews

Either the reviewers on here are friends, paid, or have never read a well written book. This book was similar to what one of my HS students would turn in. Mostly dialogue except when the narrator gushed out details we could have discovered on our own. The characters were 2D at best. I hate leaving a negative but I also hate having spent money on this because it was so highly rated when it was, in fact, bad.

It made you smile and I just kept reading because i so wanted to see him fall and just how he would get her to see him for what he was capable of. I am never disappointed with Sandi. I stopped everything to read this book and I say I have a new book boyfriend,

Valuable resource on current India

Excellent review of the inequalities in the current India. However, the third section of offering solutions is weak in that it is anecdotal and illustrative. It would have been very valuable if the solutions were offered at different levels of the society from the individual, family, local community, religion, state, nation as well as including the time frame for changes along with the needed resources for correcting the inequalities. Important contribution to the understanding the current India.

Don't buy this book!

Princeton Review obviously hasn't done their homework regarding the new AP Biology curriculum. It still reflects the old AP test format and completely omits entire sections. There is WAY to much emphasis on ecology and not enough on cells. Cell signaling and transduction is heavily emphasized in the new curriculum and this book doesn't even mention it!

I was looking forward to previewing this book and encouraging my AP Biology students to buy it. I will certainly not be recommending this.

Useful as a general biology review, but not for the AP test.

The 2013 edition of this book doesn't at all reflect the changes that have been made to the AP Biology test. This book is almost identical to my 2010 edition of the same book. That means that this book includes a great deal of information that is no longer covered on the AP test, and lacks a great deal of information that is.

For example, the new AP Biology course description states, "Memorization of the names of the phases of mitosis is beyond the scope of the course and the AP Exam." This book teaches you to memorize the phases of mitosis. What it doesn't teach you, though, is that "Cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases control the cell cycle," which the College Board requires students to know for the AP test.

The "Big Ideas" that are stressed in the AP Biology course and exam description are completely absent from this book. Instead, this book stresses the themes of the old AP test. Also lacking are any tips for how to succeed in the new free-response section of the test. Instead, it prepares you for the old free-response section that no longer exists.

But if you are a college student or general biology teacher looking for a good biology overview, this book is actually quite good. Just don't use it to prepare for the AP test.

Is not updated for the Four Big Ideas

I have been teaching AP biology for four years and was looking forward to this book being released in the hopes that it would be a good review book for the changes that collegeboard has made to the AP Biology test. It is just like all previous review books with no mention of the four big ideas or any other changes to AP bio. I originally bought the book so I would have more conceptual based questions to show my students and was severly disappointed with this book. It even states that there are four essays with equal amounts of time (when in reality, the new test will have two longer questions and a few short answer). Anyway, don't waste your money if you're hoping for an up-to-date book. Just buy a used one. I will be returning this one tomorrow :(

"This book is a reprint of the original published by McGraw-Hill \ref [MR0538168 (80d:00030)]. The only changes are the addition of the Roman numeral I to the title and the provision of a subtitle, "Asymptotic methods and perturbation theory". This latter improvement is much needed, as the original title suggested that this was a teaching book for undergraduate scientists and engineers. It is not, but is an excellent introduction to asymptotic and perturbation methods for master's degree students or beginning research students. Certain parts of it could be used for a course in asymptotics for final year undergraduates in applied mathematics or mathematical physics.

This is a book that has stood the test of time and I cannot but endorse the remarks of the original reviewer. It is written in a fresh and lively style and the many graphs and tables, comparing the results of exact and approximate methods, were in advance of its time. I have owned a copy of the original for over twenty years, using it on a regular basis, and, after the original had gone out of print, lending it to my research students. Springer-Verlag has done a great service to users of, and researchers in, asymptotics and perturbation theory by reprinting this classic."  (A.D. Wood, Mathematical Reviews)

The Classic Text on Asymptotics

I am a mathematics professor, and asymptotic methods is my area of expertise. Bender and Orszag was the standard text on this topic in the early 1980s, and it remains by far the most thorough book on the subject. I had two courses from it in graduate school and have taught from it 3 times now. I have never found a mistake. The book is very well written; its only weakness is that its graphics reflect the technology of the 1970s. Nevertheless, I am teaching from it again next year, because it is in a class by itself.

There is one thing that individual readers and faculty users should be aware of. Some of the exercises, including a few marked as "intermediate," are incredibly difficult. My instructor made the mistake of assigning exercises without working them first. I am careful not to assign any exercises until after I have worked them.

The Best Mathematical Lore Book Of All Time

I learned more mathematics from Bender & Orszag than from any other math book I own. I'm an applied physicist, and as any physicist knows, a sleazy approximation that provides good physical insight into what's going on in some system is far more useful than an unintelligible exact result.
This book covers approximate methods for solving differential and difference equations, asymptotic methods for integrals, and asymptotic and extrapolation methods for sums. There are a great many beautiful plots, and lots of discussion of the actual lore of doing--alternative ways of attacking the same problem, things to watch out for, what sorts of problems a given method is best at.
I think the most valuable parts of this book are the examples and problems, both of which are the best anywhere.
It's really great to see this old friend (first published in 1978) back in print. If you have ugly differential equations or integrals to solve, buy it!

Remarkably powerful and practical tools for analysis

This is the best applied mathematics book I have ever read, bar none. It is primarily a text on asymptotic methods for integrals, sums, differential equations, and difference equations (recurrence relations). Major topics are Laplace's method, steepest descents, stationary phase, WKB theory, boundary layer theory, and regular and singular perturbation theory. The exposition shows an understanding of the needs and tastes of physicists and engineers far beyond the usual dry theorems. It is full of lore and insight, plus the best analytic and numerical examples extant. There are hundreds of good problems as well. If you need to use asymptotic methods in your work, or just want a good read in applied math, this is your book

Mindset in Motion

Jan Koum and Brian Acton are the founders of WhatsApp, the world’s most famous messaging app. Its mission is to “empower people through technology and communication, no matter who they are, or where they live.”

Their remarkable journey is a hallmark of courage, willpower, and relentless determination. In a Guardian newspaper interview, Acton describes the relationship as “yin and yang.” He says, “I’m the naïve optimist, he’s more paranoid. I pay attention to bills and taxes, he [Koum] pays attention to our product.”

Koum was born in a rural village outside of Kiev, Ukraine. At the age of sixteen, during much political strife and instability, his family made the agonizing decision to flee their country and move to Mountain View, California. Koum’s father could not join them and was left behind. Koum told one interviewer, “I grew up in a society where everything you did was eavesdropped on, recorded, snitched on.” Koum’s difficult childhood experience under Soviet surveillance inspired the WhatsApp messaging service.

Koum and Acton are no strangers to failure and rejection. In summer 2009, Acton was looking for a job. For more than eleven years, the Stanford computer science graduate had been working at Yahoo, the social networking business, in various engineering roles.

Facebook turned me down. It was a great opportunity to connect with some fantastic people. Looking forward to life’s next adventure.

Whatever you choose to believe, life is anything but predictable. Just five years later, in a miraculous twist of fate, Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion.

To put the deal in perspective, at the time of purchase, the hotel chain Marriott International had over 120,000 staff, a twenty-two-year history, and a market cap of over $15.4 billion. WhatsApp has only fifty-five employees, although I hear they are hiring.

How did this unlikely pair become two of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet? The answer: They had harnessed the leader’s mindset.

10X Thinking

Astro Teller is a British entrepreneur, scientist, and thinker who is widely credited as one of the pioneers of 10X thinking (10X). He heads up Google X, a futuristic lab responsible for hyper-ambitious projects such as Google Glass, balloon-powered Wi-Fi networks, and the infamous Google self-driving car. According to legend, his business card describes him as “Captain of Moon Shots.”

His story inspired me to embark on a journey to unlock the anatomy of a leader’s mindset at many of the world’s most exciting organizations, from young startups to global giants.

Along the way, I uncovered some surprising insights about how the smartest leaders, teams, and entrepreneurs think and what they do to inspire change and move forward. In an interview with Wired magazine, Teller explains the power of 10X thinking: “There are tests that you can apply to see if you’re thinking big enough. The easiest one, the mantra that we use at Google X, is ten times rather than ten percent better, you tend to work from where you are: if I ask you to make a car that goes 50 miles a gallon, you can just retool the engine you already have. But if I tell you it has to run on a gallon of gas for 500 miles, you’re going to have to start over. That causes you to approach the problem so differently that weirdly, counter-intuitively, it’s often easier to make something ten times better--because perspective-shifting is just that much more powerful than hard work and resources being thrown at problems via traditional, well-tried paths.”

Imagine leading your organization up to ten times better than you do today or increasing your team’s success tenfold. 10X thinking is the golden thread that links all great leaders and is at the core of the leader’s mindset.

My challenge had been set. I wanted to answer the question, “What if any anyone could apply the principles of 10X to their mindset, their team and their leadership?”
