The book presents a vision of evangelism for the church today that is best expressed on page 33 – “The goal of evangelism is to ground, establish, institute, and train people in the reality of God’s rule”. It is a vision that picks up the strength of Jonathan Edward’s thoughts on evangelism and Charles Finney’s actions in the same (13).
I appreciate Abraham’s goal. It is nicely worded, especially when using the word “reality”. Because God is presently working and moving, we just have to have eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is saying. According to Abraham the Spirit moving is the key to it all (14). If we do not listen or see well enough to keep in step with the Spirit we will not experience the fullness of the kingdom. If we cannot see ourselves as witnesses and proclaimers of Christ’s reign then we will not have the proper motivation to take action. Being a proper witness, as Abraham argues must include being kind to neighbors, engaging in acts of justice, and helping widows and orphans. This means that everyone is an evangelist (24).

Abraham rightly says that mere proclaiming and doing acts of mercy are insufficient to be proclaiming the kingdom. Abraham does offer justification for giving the goal of evangelism as God’s rule but the book is lacking in Scripture references and a hashing through some solid examples. It tends to run over very quickly some highlights that the early church practiced. The problem with this is that with this type of approach one can justify a variety of practices that the church should do now based on their quick scan of the Bible. In many ways this book has been surpassed by N.T. Wright’s book “Simply Jesus”. Wright offers a more thorough look into what is going on in Scripture. As an example on page 34, Abraham says that the church’s first task is to “celebrate and worship”. He offers no justification why this might be. It would seem just as proper maybe that our first goal should be to act as vice regents in this world for him. In the book After You Believe by N.T. Wright we find a justification as to why celebrating might be warranted. Wright gives his own translation of Phil. 4:4,5 on page 227, “Celebrate in the Lord always! I’ll say it again. Celebrate! The Lord is right here!...” Philippians 3 says that celebrating being a part of the Lord’s entourage is a safeguard against discouragement and trouble with others. It is a focus on the grace poured out on us to bring us into the kingdom that will dissipate any differences we might have with others. As an analogy it is what Americans should be doing every day as they compare their rights, privileges, and living conditions as American citizens to other countries.

So Abraham is right that being grateful is what we should do first, but he was not convincing enough.

In good Wesleyan fashion Abraham argues we should not preach this message the same to everyone, but we need long and short versions of it (40). He wisely distinguishes what has happened in the past with certain revivals as coming to those already churched, to today where Bible literacy and church attendance is declining in America. To those with church background we need to tweak our message from those who have hardly any background. Oddly though Abraham sees the gospel message that we proclaim as intrinsically attractive as it stands (50). This is antithetical to Scripture’s revelation of how the gospel is seen. To Jews it is highly offensive that someone crucified would be a savior and king, and to the Greeks it is pure nonsense that one person could take on everyone’s guilt and become king by being a servant. What Abraham should have noted at this point is that this then is where the Spirit comes in to play. He chose what is foolish to shame the wise. He gives gifts to the lower ranking in the church to balance out the church. There is so much grace given to us, that we rightly respond with faith, but we must realize that the mystery of God is what ultimately is the hook. Christians should always be celebrating as being adopted because the way it was done is beyond comprehension as well as the future benefits that no one can wrap their heads around it. So no one is going to be satisfied with the proclamation but for those who seek the truth it will set them free.

Later on in the book Abraham advises pastors should preach evangelistic sermons, hold revivals, and give ample time for testimonies as part of the evangelism package. I agree, but I want to say something about revival services that Abraham should have mentioned. The most successful services are ones that require sacrifice on the part of those who show up. The Great Awakening displayed such sacrifice. People traveled up to 2 days to show up to a meeting! If we make it so easy for someone to show up to a revival service with food and daycare and short messages we are not requiring what Jesus did of his hearers. He gave them a taste of a message but wanted them to pursue him further to inquire as to the meaning of what he said. The message might not be intrinsically attractive from a human perspective but it does hold power to persuade form the Spirit. So we give our message and do not necessarily have a prepared sinner’s prayer ready to go. More importantly we have love and care ready to go, when someone shows up. It is true after all that in many ways someone who converts is like a newborn and needs care (74).

I am glad that Abraham continues to harp on the reign of Christ being most important. He strengthens this thesis by stating that many churches will use the Bible as the standard, and he wisely notes that this uplifting of the Bible over everything else is a modern invention in reaction to the Catholic church (77). I am also glad he fully accepts the gifts of the Spirit as being in operation today (80). However I do not agree that the reason why we in America do not see it is because of our skepticism. I grew up in a church that was anything but skeptical, probably too far the other direction. I would argue it has to do with two different things. 1. More gifts will be manifested in the beginning stages of the gospel proclamation 2. Unity with each other is the key to the Spirit’s moving in our midst rather than skepticism which Abraham never proves exists. Disunity is obviously a huge problem as we see just by the number of denominations. Some were forced to leave but others chose disunity over minor differences, which is a practice that should be abhorred.
Lastly, and I will continue to harp on this but he lastly mentions disciplines of prayer, fasting, scripture study, and Eucharist attendance as fundamental means of grace over all others. He never offers justification much like the rest of the book. I agree that a couple of these are fundamental activities though I fail to see how fasting is. In any event again it is against the doctrine of prevenient grace to believe in what is called the “means of grace”. Prevenient grace states that anything can be used as a grace bearer. IN fact even something meant to be disastrous for us from the devil himself can result in grace being evident. It is going down the road of legalism to suggest that God uses certain channels regularly as means of grace. I even cringe every time I suggest to couples that communication is key to a happy marriage. They already know that it is. What helps more is that there is guidance we can give to couples that will enhance their communication skills. So prayer is not a means of grace, but helping someone frame their prayers via using the Lord’s Prayer is helpful. But one must be careful. Lectio Divina has been touted as the best way to meditate on Scripture but in my estimation it is inadequate and leads one to believe that individual words are without error in Scripture.

So yes I agree with Abraham that we cannot just abandon someone to life after introducing them to the proper Gospel message but we must not give them teaching that will send them back to carrying heavy burdens. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

Spreading the Magic!

In another fun book by Barbara Prignano, "Anthony and the Magic Bumblebee" brings back Anthony, Joseph and their garden. Joseph waters the garden regularly, and while water helps plants to grow, the Magic Bumblebee teaches the children that pollination is required to produce more plants. With the Magic Bumblebee sprinking his magic and spreading plant pollen, new, tall, and healthy sunflowers soon begin to grow.

Cute characters and illustrations also help to introduce young readers to plant science and hopefully open their minds to the great mysteries of one of nature's most important processes.

Anthony and the Magic Bumblebee is a very enjoyable book. My daughter loves it. She has me reading it to her at story time every day which I am happy about since I enjoy it too. It's filled with lots of love and affection.

Anthony and the Magic Bumblebee is as adorable as the first book How Bunnies Got Their Cottontails.

This book is very well written and the illustrations are adorable.

This cute story about a small bumblebee that uses his magic dust for pollination teaches children the basics of how growing plants and flowers need more than just water. About the Author

Dr. R. Eric Landrum received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology with an emphasis in Quantitative Methodology from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1989, and joined the Boise State University Psychology Department in 1992. He served as Chair of the Psychology Department from 1996-2000. For the 2005-2006 academic year, he served as the Interim Chair of the Psychology Department. The general trend underlying Dr. Landrum's research centers on college student success. How can we best create a teaching and learning environment that allows students to achieve their academic goals? Much of this work involves the development of survey and questionnaire instruments to measure behavioral outcomes--involving good theoretical design of instruments, establishment of validity and reliability, and other measurement operations.

 

Stephen F. Davis is Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. Currently he is Visiting Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Texas Wesleyan University and Distinguished Guest Professor at Morningside College. In 2002—2003 he was the Knapp Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Diego. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from Southern Methodist University and his PhD in experimental psychology from Texas Christian University. In 2007 he was awarded the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Morningside College. His research, which always includes student assistants, has investigated such diverse topics as academic dishonesty, learning versus grade orientation of students, Type A personality, the Impostor Phenomenon, and the behavioral effects of ingesting toxic metals. He is the author of more than 300 journal articles, 31 books, and more than 900 convention presentations.

Career Planning

I just changed my major to psychology at the end of last spring. My program requires a Career Planning course for psychology, this is my first semester of junior year. The course partnered with this book was a nice intervention. This is not a huge book, one could probably read it in one sitting. There is a lot of useful information about fields in psychology, graduate admissions, and multiple chapters on areas of undergraduate involvement that will make for a competitive student applying to grad school or for getting the most out of your undergrad experience in general. I liked the chapter on APA format, it is laid out very nicely. I have been raised in MLA format since frashman year in highschool, so has not been the easiest transition. I hear a lot of "students need to be doing x, y, z" to get into grad school, this book puts these things in perspective. I have followed a lot of the advice given in this book, like becoming involved with research, and I am getting more out of my classes and achieving better grades.

Just the psychology major, no career ops and strategies for success.

I have read many on career options with a psychology major but this book by far is probably the most undergraduate of all. It is basically a fill-in guide line as to what you should do with a psychology major but I am still confused as the book is so general that is assumes that the process is the same for all psychology-major professions that are available. First it tells you your options with a bachelor's degree, then it goes on to master's and doctorals. And then the strategies for success is followed by how to get into master's and doctorals with pages continued by how to study effectively.
I believe the subtitle is very misleading as it does not give any in-depth information on the different fields and areas of psychology professions that are curretly available. It does though, have a list of possible career options and a 1-2 sentence description as to what you could do but that certainly does not define everything for that specific job-title. I feel the book is made for over-achieving high schoolers who believe if they follow everything that is written in the book, they automatically have a success story - which is not true.
If you're looking on a guidance book on how to survive through uni to obtain a bachelor's in psychology, or a book you can read so you have some kind of idea as to why you're majoring in psychology when someone asks you, then this might be it but there are definately other more thorough books out there if you're looking to read about psychology, not 'how to get in and have a basic idea'.
On the up-side, it can be very interactive.

It is a great book because it helps you understand the different paths you could follow in the psychology profession. It also helps with knowing, that the path can be too long for some people.
The book has strategies about how to get into graduate school following to have a career in psychology.
The book is simple and to the point. Not Phd. non sense....

A biased endevour, but is a sexist failure

An biased attempt, but fails on many fronts. The author tries very hard to explain male behavior. She wants to explain why MEN rape women, why MEN are aggressive and why MEN ogle women. Phew. She asserts that men are BAD and women are victims, like every other good feminist or women's studies major. She ends up being another female trying to understand men... and she cannot. She is female and not male.
IN THE REAL WORLD, far away from women's academia: WOMEN rape men. WOMEN are aggressive. WOMEN ogle men. All at near the same rates and men do to women! This author should look deep into her own soul to discover her own power driven need to blame aggression on MEN, as that is the motivation for rape. EVERY human has these behaviors. Shame on the author for hating men.

How science influences society, and vice versa.

While the author may not be a biologist, she demonstrates how pop-darwinism has influenced mainstream society, often for the worse. I certainly have a lot of respect and interest in Evolutionary Psychology, but this book made me think about a lot of its claims in a different light. An excellent book to read whether your interest is biology or social sciences.

Recommended, but with Reservations

This slim volume offers a survey of how Darwinism has been abused in popular science literature to justify the ideology of patriarchy. Unfortunately for the author, her misreading of Darwinism, lack of understanding of Baldwinian selection, as well as some evident philosophical blunders overshadows the important message she conveys. One example of her misunderstanding of Darwinism is in her hypothetical example of how male impotence could be selected for. McCaughey forgets that her example as stated works ONLY if individual organisms are the unit of selection. However, as Dawkins points out, and what is now widely accepted, is that genes are the units of selection. She also tends to hedge considerably with her use of soft language; which, though common in the social sciences, is quite useless to demonstrate anything of value, and tends to mislead uncritical readers.

This book is interesting, and worth reading, but only if read carefully, cautiously, and critically.

Review from someone who is bad at math:
By Newly declared MATH NERD!
I have never been a strong math student; I have always had trouble making sense of numbers and received a D in my spring 2015 stats course.
I have always used my textbook for math classes to copy down the problem and attempt to make the answer match the one in the back, praying that the homework only consisted of odd numbered problems because they were the only answers provided. Straightforward Statistics is written unlike any math textbook I have ever used.
This textbook allowed me to conceptualize the statistical concepts we learned by providing relevant example problems and very clearly breaking down the different procedures introduced in each chapter.
Each chapter thoroughly covers a concept or statistical test in a way that breaks down to WHY you would use it as well as how to do so. The beginning of each chapter clearly states what the reader is expected to gain from it. Throughout the chapter are “pop quizzes” and awesome note bubbles that point out: things to focus on, the author’s insights on a certain procedure, and hints on how to look at problems differently. The end of the chapter provides: a concise recap of the method learned (written in a way that someone with ZERO stats experience could totally grasp), a list of key terms and definitions and a learning assessment with a variety of problems to test your understanding.
I have never before had any reason to enjoy reading a math book, nor have I ever felt the need to write a review of one. This book reads like a narrative, not an endless list of equations to memorize. After using this textbook in my inferential statistics course I was shocked to discover that I not only understood the material, but I absolutely loved learning about it. I finished my fall 2015 semester with a solid B in statistics (and it COULD have been an A if I had managed my time properly on our first exam!).
I am currently in my final semester of my undergraduate degree. My major is psychology. My initial graduate and professional plans/goals focused mainly on studying behavior and learning and expanding upon different psychological theories. After learning to view statistics with the same enthusiasm and love as the author so obviously does, I was forced to allow myself to consider a previously unattainable education route that focuses intensely on analyzing data. Fields such as quantitative psychology and applied behavioral statistics are now in my radar.
I always assumed that only those with a genius IQ ever actually enjoyed playing with math, though now I find myself (previously considered BAD at math....) super excited to apply the statistical tests that I learned in this book to various data that I encounter. I am now able to take a seemingly random group of numbers and be confident in my ability to make them mean something; AND completely understand what my results mean and why a specific test is used.
I never expected keep a math textbook on my desk and refer to it regularly, sometimes just for fun, to see what the numbers "look like"! I have also never wanted to write over 500 words on how AWESOME I think my math text is. This book allowed me to develop a confidence that I thought was lost in my previous battle with numbers.
I am still baffled by how excited I am about statistics. Straightforward Statistics is truly the best textbook I have used for any type of course. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to any and all that are dreading taking a stats course. This book allowed me to broaden my educational interests and for that I am thankful.

I selected this book for my students because I liked the explanations and felt it covered more than traditional textbooks (for example, it teaches t-tests for when equal variances are not assumed). I was disappointed in the ANOVA chapter because it does not describe repeated measures or two-factor ANOVA. I already had materials and slides for this and felt this flaw was not enough to select another book. Given how reasonably priced this textbook is, I feel comfortable knowing I am not placing an excessive financial burden on my students. All around, a solid textbook. The two primary criticisms I have are: The ANOVA chapter feels incomplete, and much to my surprise, the student edition has all the answers in the back (not just odd questions). This makes the book less practical for assigning homework from but better for students who wish to get extra practice.

Ellis R. Brotzman (PhD, New York University), now retired, was senior professor of Old Testament at Tyndale Theological Seminary in the Netherlands for more than twenty years. He lives in Houghton, New York.

Eric J. Tully (PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is assistant professor of Old Testament and Semitic languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois.
